Metropolis Zone, Act 3

The eighth zone in Sonic 2, Metropolis Zone is an extra-long level in which Dr. Robotnik resides. There are lots of machines, including the Pipe Teleporter and screw elevators. Dr. Robotnik protects himself against Sonic with spiraling eggs, each containing a fake Robotnik.

Metropolis Zone had 3 acts, like Sonic 1. However, all the other zones in Sonic 2 had two or one. This was because Tom Payne (the artist in charge of this level) had also been assigned another level that was finally scrapped due to lack of time, in favor of this third act.

Instruction Manual Description

Sonic's finally chased Robotnik to his own capital city. But he finds a fortress of iron and steel. Danger lurks in every spinning cylinder, pounding piston and rolling gear. Hold the D-Button RIGHT or LEFT to wind the nut up and down the screws.

Villains

Enemies

  • Asteron - Starfish enemy, explodes when you go near it, launching 5 small spikes outwards.
  • Slicer - Mantis enemy, throws two blades at Sonic.
  • Shellcracker - Crab enemy, extends its giant claw towards Sonic. Referred to as "Shellcraker" in Sonic Jam.

Boss

  • Boss: Dr. Robotnik's Capsule Clone Machine
  • Hits: 8

When the fight starts, Robotnik comes down in his ship which is surrounded by seven white orbs flying around it like Saturn's rings, at close range. These rings protect him from attack. There are, however, some ways to hit him at this point. One, of course, is to get hit yourself and then hit him. This is a bad idea to do regularly but if you get hit use it to hit him (but put recovering a ring first). Another way is to try and hit him at a point where the orbs don't cover him - such points do exist, but only for split seconds. This is very risky and I don't recommend trying it until you've destroyed all but one orb. It is nearly impossible at the beginning. A third, more sneaky, way is to use Tails (with a second controller) to hit him since Tails can take an infinite amount of damage without losing rings or dying. This, of course, requires that you're playing as Sonic and Tails and have a second controller.

Differences between beta and final

  • Pistons don't throw you up as high as they do in the final.
  • Metal crushers do not hurt you unless you go underneath them when they come down.
  • Fire and lava have no effect.
  • Sonic falls through most of the rotating nets, but one of them does work.
  • Sonic can rotate a nut upwards past the height of the supporting screw pole.
  • Act 3 has a special lift that was cut from the final game.
