Porting of SNN articles

Don't do it. At least rewrite the articles.--MUser 22:47, 28 May 2009 (CDT)

Is there a huge problem with it? I mean, I figure both articles will split off into their own entities as time goes on, and the articles as they are right now are pretty well done. After all, content is content... --Tweaker 22:49, 28 May 2009 (CDT)
I believe every article he created today was a straight port of an existing article at Sonic News Network.--MUser 22:59, 28 May 2009 (CDT)
Well, I'll put it this way--the articles he's porting aren't exactly high-traffic articles; we're not going to get a flurry of Sonic Drift 2-related activity, and frankly us having the pages is more for completionism than any in-depth interest. I would be more concerned with this activity on more "important" pages (though I do realize everyone values different aspects of this site, obviously.) I'm really more concerned by SNN's stylistic use of tense (i.e., use of "you") than I am the content itself, and things may need to be rewritten on that basis alone. Finally, they seem to have no problem cribbing from us, so I have no problem taking minor articles--and I do stress the minor part of that. -- Scarred Sun 01:45, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
Would it help if I point out that I am SNN's Molten Scandium and as such am the original author of ALL those articles that I've ported? So they weren't so much cut/pasted from SNN as they were cut/pasted from my brain to SNN and then later to here. I appreciate that my style is a tad more informal than the paradigm on Retro, but hey, I have fun when writing these things. Secondly, "straight port" is a somewhat harsh indictment; they were quite a chore to reformat, I'll have you know. :/ Frozen Nitrogen 05:37, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
To be honest, most of the articles that I've seen on SNN are poor, though at least it's filling up this wiki. -- SOTI 08:51, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
Actually, that information does help clear things up. Feel free to carry on, then. :) --Tweaker 14:58, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
"To be honest, most of the articles that I've seen on SNN are poor, though at least it's filling up this wiki. -- SOTI 08:51, 29 May 2009 (CDT)"
Ow! My pride. :(
But you're right, in the large part. Which is why I'm here right now. Frozen Nitrogen 16:36, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
Yeah, that puts me more at ease knowing they were your articles to begin with. I still dont like straight pasting of SNN articles cause its another independant wiki that is trying to make it on its own. Noone is hurt if we copy paste wikipedia articles.--MUser 08:40, 31 May 2009 (CDT)
Right, but this is the independent writing of Frozen Nitrogen--not the property of SNN. By all means, he wrote it; it's his to publish wherever he pleases, verbatim.
In other words, he's not copy/pasting from SNN; he's copy/pasting from his head. --Tweaker 14:29, 31 May 2009 (CDT)
The same way I copy/paste from my head when conjecturing that Wendy Witchcart is a Nocturnus spy? :P Frozen Nitrogen 20:41, 31 May 2009 (CDT)

o hi there

You should join the Sonic Retro IRC channel. - Scarred Sun 14:42, 6 June 2009 (CDT)

Roboticizer

In trying to retain the history of the roboticizer article in your rename of it to Roboticization, I seem to have lost any changes you made to the article because of some double redirect crap. In the future, can you please request a move instead of trying to make one yourself? It would help avoid issues like this in the future. --Tweaker 15:17, 6 June 2009 (CDT)

Screenshots

I've noticed that the recent screenshots you've uploaded are seriously poor in from size issues (like the SMS/GG screenshots) to filters being used. You should get an emulator like Gens/GS which the filters are off by default I think. SOTI 10:24, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Seriously, stop uploading broken screenshots. Or unneeded ones like Atomic Destroyer. You're dealing more damage than help. Nineko 10:48, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
Now, now, they're not broken. Sub-optimal, perhaps. Retarded, one might say. But even a retarded kid can provide some service to society. Sorting glass, for example.
Err... I seem to have lost my point somewhere in there. Frozen Nitrogen 10:58, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
Well, you could at least tag the images with a { { replace } } tag. Remove the spaces between the {.--MUser 10:59, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

That screenshot is 320x224, proper resolution, NO FILTERS, and I used Blue Knuckles for the sake of it. Nineko 11:05, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
It's quite difficult to determine where I'm going wrong if you change the pics I'm trying to use to work it out, lols. Frozen Nitrogen 11:10, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
Ok ok sorry I'll revert it back :) Nineko 11:13, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

- Am I getting closer here? Frozen Nitrogen 11:26, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Now this is the story all about how

...my images got flipped-turned upside sown, and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you... err... why all the pix are filtered and look rubbish.

I made all these screencaps months ago for the Sonic News Network, which has absolutely no image quality guidelines at all. Not knowing how to use Kega Fusion properly, my method of acquiring pix was to PrtScr by pressing the Prt Scr key, then crop the picture out of the larger image of my desktop, THEN shrink THAT pic down in Paint. Worst method evar.

I have since moved on to learning how to turn filters off, and the staggering technical development of working out how to change the size of the window to one more apropos, but cropping's still a bitch.

So if anyone knows how to screencap properly from Fusion, do tell. And then I won't end up uploading teh mangled piccies, yes? Frozen Nitrogen 11:48, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Definately learn how to take proper screenshots. I had to learn how to do it when I started uploading pics. The proper dimensions for Mega drive pics would be 320x240 or something. You had the screen double the size or so in that last pic.--MUser 11:51, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

I think I'm at the last hurled with it now. Fusion does have the built-in option to auto-take screenies... I just don't have a clue where it puts them. It's certainly not anywhere obvious... :S Frozen Nitrogen 11:55, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

HOW TO TAKE PROPER SCREENSHOTS:

  1. I would recommend actually using Gens/GS over Kega Fusion for this--set "Render" to Normal and hit Shift+Backspace while playing to get a 320x224 PNG image (Kega will stretch to 320x240). Personally, I find Shift+Backspace hard to type, so I use a macro manager (to take it down to one keystroke) and/or a timer that automatically takes pictures every x seconds. You can change what directory the images will output to by selecting Options-->Directories.
  2. Run pngpress in the same folder as your screenshots to get them as optimized as possible.

- Scarred Sun 13:59, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Manual Scans

If you want, there is a upload page that allows for multiple images to be uploaded at once as long as they are all in a zip. If you scan more manuals it will help you save time uploading there. You can find that upload page here.

SMS/GG screenshots

I use Emukon to take screenshots. It outputs unfiltered PNGs with decent brightness. The only issue it has is an 8-pixel wide border on the left edge of Master System screenshots, which needs to be cropped. Other than that it's perfect. - Hivebrain 12:38, 9 June 2009 (CDT)

Basic English

In some articles I had to actually consult a online dictionary to look up words used in them. Try to use less complicated words. You can look at what I changed in the Tails adventures level pages to see what I mean.--MUser 20:57, 11 June 2009 (CDT)

There's nothing wrong with using an expansive vocabulary--if anything, it makes the writing richer and more diverse. My only problem is the fact that I believe the writing should be in a more encyclopedic tone--not a fictional tone as the precedent seems to be so far. --Tweaker 13:49, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
I appreciate the drive for encyclopaedicness-ness, I really do, but at the same time I appreciate that I'm writing about the storyline of games staring talking ninja chameleons and morbidly obese roboticists. So I write these things with a degree of amusement. If you really feel it necessary to bleed all the fun out of an article afterwards by bland-erising the language, then I won't try and get into an edit war about it... but I don't intend to write in greyscale Wikipedese for every single entry I upload.
TL;DR: 'words words words!! Frozen Nitrogen 13:56, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
You don't seem to understand a couple of things. Number one, Sonic Retro is not an extensive, expansive fan-fiction or even based in fiction--it is a factual account of the Sonic the Hedgehog series that encompasses every single subject that we can possibly hope to cover... as long as they're based in fact. When you write a summary that describes something from an objective, factual perspective, you don't add adjectives such as "overjoyed, courageous kitsune" if you're trying to, say, refer to Tails--you just say Tails.
I have as much as an appreciation for literature as anyone else, but the fact of the matter is that an encyclopedia--which we are in pretty much every sense of the word--is not a work of fiction, and as such dictates a different tone of description. That said, nothing says you can't be articulate in your writing; as long as you continue to provide a proper summary of what you're writing about that carries the correct tone, you can use whatever kind of words you want. --Tweaker 14:19, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
Here's a tip: Before criticizing other users for their use of the English language, make sure you actually use English correctly yourself. As an example, "should of" and "could of" are incorrect; the correct phrases are "should have" and "could have". --GerbilSoft 14:04, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Is this MY grammar getting critiqued, or someone else's? 'Cos I'm usually quite good with the "have / ofs", and if I'm doing those wrong, it's certainly not intentional. :S Frozen Nitrogen 14:10, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Frozen Nitrogen 14:15, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
Nevermind GerbilSofts attempt at derailing the topic. I appreciate your additions to the wiki Frozen Nitrogen, but I sort of wanted to say what Tweaker said, let's have a encyclopedic tone in the articles. For example, in ficition you might say young fox, but in a encyclopedia you can just say Tails.--MUser 14:16, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Fair play indeed. My method is usually to use Tails the first time I mention him, but in an article about Tails Adventures, that would, IMO, get old quite quickly, with ""ails can do this, and Tails can do that, and when Tails goes here, Tails can find this item, which Tails can use to do something". ...Which is why I mix it up a little bit. Frozen Nitrogen 14:35, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Referencing

How I handle referencing is to simply have a weblink. This is how I do the reference.[1] It leaves a nice number even.--MUser 10:13, 16 June 2009 (CDT)

Dark SMS screenshots

What emulator are you using to take them? Kega is known to take extra dark screenshots, I personally use Dega, which unfortunately saves them as 256x192, and I later crop them by hand; afterwards, pngout :) Nineko 22:05, 26 June 2009 (CDT)

Art Marine

Sorry, I don't know what's up with that pic, you should really ask Scarred Sun about it. Nineko 10:55, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Sonic Rivals 2 screenshots

If I recall correctly, there was a guy over at The Sonic Stadium who was doing custom Rivals 2 shots for people who asked, and I just asked to get a title screen shot. They've since lost their DB, so that thread doesn't exist any longer, but I bet if you made a topic or something asking for that guy who did them you'd probably have some luck.

Also, somewhat on the subject, rare-for-MobyGames unwatermarked shots here. - Scarred Sun 03:41, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Tom Payne interview

You got the transcript for that somewhere?--MUser 14:36, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Nope. I went to bed while the interview was still ongoing, after being assured that someone was taking a transcript and they'd have it posted on the wiki for me to read later. The absence thereof makes me a sad Nitrogen.
In an RPG-style quest, I suppose you could wander around Badniknet-town and ask people if they know anything about the missing data. You might get XP and a Sword +1 for completing it! Frozen Nitrogen 15:42, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
If you're still looking for it, here it is: http://blazemp3.sepwich.com/sage09/tpayne_2009.html - you'll find all 3 interviews in that folder. SOTI 23:38, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Right. What I will do is link your signature on SNN to here so that they know where you are. Am I capable of erection now?--Launchballer 15:01, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
