Roarey Raccoon is the head of Sonic Stadium Message Board (part of The Sonic Stadium network), promoted to that job in October 2005 after serving the board faithfully as an admin (and early on as a moderator) for over a year.

His actions and way of moderating has divided the members of SSMB's opinions, some complaining about him being overly strict and having a "nazi attitude", while some think that he has done what has needed to be done in order to make the board enjoyable. His reputation as a force to be reckoned with is based on his "cleaning" move in 2004, when he (together with Dreadknux) organised and executed an era when the rules of the message board were to be followed strictly, the purpose of which being to rid the board from an influx of spammers and newbies the message board had started to suffer from in large amounts, and when the level of discussion was raised in order to make the board more mature. Even though Roarey has taken a more laid-back attitude nowadays, his name is still slightly feared by some members.

His name is often confused with Roareye.

Brief History

  • Takes it up the ass from Flint.
  • Discovered SSMB in 2003 whilst hunting for Sonic sites, joined as a member and remained relatively idle, prefering to read rather than contribute.
  • In the time before the board was terrorised by Omega13a, the board was teeming with spammers and Roarey, known then by the alias Big_Al, made a topic about the issue to instigate changes (see below). In so doing he achieved the attention of the SSMB staff at the time.
  • Before the current forum was made in 2004, following the Omega13a incident, Roarey was offered a staff job on SSMB; something he had hoped he would get. Roarey took the job and became a moderator when the new board opened in May 2004.
  • Nervous as a new staffer, Roarey buckled under the demands of the SSMB members, whom at first did not take kindly to his tendency to lock topics and enforce the rules. This quick spell of activity for Roarey was subdued by his conscience, causing him to sit back and watch as the board decended into the chaos he had once tried to reverse. Seeing this happen, he decided to take action and, along with Dreadknux, the two took the board back by force. In light of his change in tactics his name was changed to Bailey. All this occured following an accidental adminship, caused by Dreadknux, who later 'couldn't be arsed' to move Roarey back to moderator status.
  • Much toil and grief followed, arguments with members and staff alike, confrontation at almost every step. Roarey, loving the SSMB for what it was and determined to make the changes he set out to make, ignored those around him to the best of his ability and carried on doing what he thought was best.
  • In mid 2005, Roarey felt his work had paid off and, with encouragement from B'man and Dreadknux, he changed his ways again and calmed down his antics.
  • Still thinking of new ways to improve the board, Roarey enjoys his position as the head admin of the SSMB.

For nostalgia value, Roarey kept record of the post he made that was to secure his position as a member of staff at the SSMB. Here is that post for those whom are interested:

My dear members of the SSMB, as this is a forum for the expression of opinion I will revel in such a privilege and do just that. A long time ago, in days locked in history so far away to recall with clarity, the SSMB was a thriving and beautiful place. The board was so appealing and comforting that I felt proud to be a member. Throughout my time on this fantastic board I have met good friends and therefore this board is owed respect and recognition in mine eye. This board was once my cure for the relentless boredom inherent in the usage of the internet. As with all things, the passage of time results in change and transformation; changed and transformed, this board is, the results however are somewhat sad. Forget the new looks of the board, this indeed could not be helped, incessant hackers have attacked and ruined th e boards image but it is nothing that one cannot get used to (the admins of this board do fantastic work, as I am sure you are aware). What the problem is, to those who care, are the number of ignorant and idiotic people on the board. I know I am repeating myself but I am far from finished.

The last time I entered the general discussion section I was encountered by countless topics bearing the subjects of ‘I’m Back!!!!’ and “I’ll be away for a few days’. Firstly, these aren’t discussion topics at all, they are pointless and pathetic. I can see these topics being made to counterattack boredom but to be honest, tell the people who will care that you will be away and the people who will know you enough to care that you have returned. Other topics which are open for discussion with the potential for a decent set of points and arguments, have instead become filled with directionless chatter, each post directly answering the one before it in a mere sentence. It actually takes people like Surfing Pikachu to make topics interesting and worth posting in. As I am aware the rules of the board clearly state that this MB is not a chat room, this is an obvious point yes, but why then is this board used for senseless chatter? What is noted to usually occur is the following: A person will make a point at the start of the topic, this will then be followed by a swarm of tiny posts stating in the simplest sense whether they agree or disagree. This usually leads to off-topic nonsense and eventually even petty criticism and possibly even something as stupid as flaming can occur. There is a place on the board for this tripe, if any, and that is the fluff section.

The other variety of topic, which I have constantly been encountered with are those of repetition. Why make a topic on, say: “Who is your favourite Sonic character?” when if you make a few clicks through the archived topics you will find such a topic to post in? It is a ridiculous waste of space and it grows tiresome.

I’m no moderator of this board (I do have some experience in the matter) but I know the purpose of message boards and the fact that they simply cannot work if the rules are not painstakingly obeyed. If you have a problem with having to type more than a mere sentence I say again that the fluff section is there to cater for you. If people cannot take a bloody message board seriously, what hope do you have for taking anything seriously? The internet is an adult place in many respects, if it were not then children would be able to surf unprotected, this however is not the case. Therefore, ladies and gents, a certain amount of growing up is in order. You should respect this board and the hard work and unbelievable effort which has gone into creating and managing it for you. This respect can be paid very simply by honouring the fair and just rules that apply to this board and by not filling the forums with content less appetising than the brine in a tin of pilchards.

I am aware that this post will probably be completely ignored, save a few people, yet I feel the need to make this point as the truth is entitled to show itself in its own right.

To put this in a more accessible form, here is what I would suggest:

Making a point – This is a simple affair; firstly, if the point you wish to make has no topic to coincide with it then start a new one. At the start of the topic make your point clearly and await replies. If the point you wish to make has a topic in which to place it then do so. If you are simply going to write a single lazy sentence to boost your post count then don’t bother, there are many a time and a place for drivel. Respect – Learn to respect other peoples opinions, nobody has lived long enough, nor knows enough to be sure that they are correct. Be mindful of this and pay attention to what other people think. This will gain you respect for yourself from those worthy enough to give it.

I am aware that this can be found in the rules section and I am also aware that I am to abide by the things I have said. The above are not instructions. They are a guid eline which, if followed, will result in a far more pleasant and rich group. I leave decisions to you lot of course but to speak for myself I am tired of the rubbish and I don’t want to leave this board.

I can only hope that the replies to this post do not simply prove my point.
