For the Nintendo 3DS version of the boss fight, see Time Eater (Sonic Generations 3DS boss).

The Time Eater is the final boss in Sonic Generations. This boss is fought as both Sonics in their Super forms, similar to other Super Sonic-only final bosses since The Doomsday Zone.

Story

The Time Eater was an ancient being found in deep space by Dr. Eggman some time after the ending of Sonic Colours, who decided to use its properties of manipulating time and space to erase his past defeats.[1] However, he realized he would not be able to do this alone, so he asked his past self from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to help him with modifying the Time Eater for their use. Once perfected, they used the Time Eater to rip places from Sonic's history and place them in the White Space, then ruined the hedgehog's birthday party and sending his friends to the White Space.

Though both Sonics do their best in avoiding the Time Eater's attacks, they are ambushed and crushed into the floor. At this point, Sonic's friends (including rival bosses Shadow and Silver) appear and cheer on the two hedgehogs, giving them the willpower to use the Chaos Emeralds and change into their Super forms.

In the English script, Classic Tails refers to Classic Eggman as "Dr. Robotnik" when they see him before this battle. This latter is the name that he received when the pre-Sonic Adventure Sonic games were localised for English-speaking territories. Classic Eggman responds: "Nobody calls me that anymore." In the Japanese script, Classic Tails simply points out how there are two Eggmen.

Strategy

The fight takes place in a strange void, supposedly created by the Time Eater itself. The player fights him as both the Classic and Modern Super Sonics. The monster will sometimes switch perspectives, and the player can also switch perspectives at any time by pressing the Y/Triangle button. The perspective change allows the player to dodge attacks between dimensions, and each perspective comes with its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • In 3D, more space allows for greater evasion of flying objects and attacks. Rings are in bunches; however, they can be harder to find and obtain.
  • In 2D, the reduced perspective makes Ring gathering a breeze, but dodging attacks in this perspective is considerably harder.

The Time Eater will attack by throwing random objects from Sonic's history at the player to try and block their path (though they can throw one of the Sonics into these to clear the obstacles in their way), as well as warping its hands through time and space to attack and firing Homing Shots. Sonic's friends will communicate with the two Sonics throughout the fight, and will constantly telegraph the Time Eater's attacks.

To attack the monster, the player must simply make it to its core and attack it. Being Super, they will overload the monster and damage it as a result, and must be done thrice to defeat it. After two hits, the Time Eater will lose its lower set of arms, but will start using new attacks to compensate. One such attack is a giant laser that will charge up and fire at both Super Sonics, which must be avoided by switching perspectives at the last second. Other attacks include slowing down time followed by a heavy barrage of Homing Shots, and firing purple rings that will immobilise one of the Super Sonics, making co-op attacks and switching perspectives impossible to do until the captured Sonic is freed.

On its fourth and final hit, the Time Eater will do a combined Classic and Modern Eggman attack involving a huge, flaming sphere. At this point, the player must press Left Bumper+Right Bumper/L1+R1 together to dispel this attack and break through the Time Eater's core. If the buttons are released too early, the player will be pushed back and the Time Eater will repeat its attack. If the buttons are held down long enough, the core will be shattered and the monster will explode, throwing all the characters out of the White Space sans the Eggmen.

In Hard Mode, the Time Eater will become harder to catch up to, the amount of objects to avoid will be increased, and up to three Homing Shots will be fired instead of one if the Time Eater is given enough distance. The final attack will require the player to hold Left Bumper+Right Bumper/L1+R1 longer.
