The Day the World Stood Still is the 49th episode in the first season of Sonic X. In the English dub, it is known as The Beginning of the End.

Episode Summary

Sonic's influence on Earth's culture continues to gain momentum. Even Decoe and Bocoe are enjoying a newfound sense of freedom. Having renounced Dr. Eggman, they are finally serving their criminal sentence through volunteer work, trimming the hedges at Chris' house--a task they find extremely fulfilling. Everyone, from Chris' parents to Bokkun, is wearing a "Freedom" T-shirt. Eggman, meanwhile, is stuck doing his own cooking, and it's completely inedible.

A shadow is cast on these happy times when the President's aides arrive at Chris' house with a geophysicist, who explains to Chuck that Sonic's presence is causing time to die. Apparently, Sonic's world used to be the same as Earth, and split into parallel dimensions with different timelines. If Sonic and his friends remain in Chris' world, the timelines will interfere with each other and freeze, leaving no past or future. The way to prevent this fate would be to cause Chaos Control again, split the two worlds, and send everyone back home again.

Chris hears the end of the conversation, and doesn't like it one bit. Unwilling to lose Sonic, he thinks that the trouble must be Eggman's fault again. He asks Decoe and Bocoe to take him to Eggman. They don't know where he is, but they summon Bokkun, who is willing to take them in exchange for decent food and oil. Eggman plays off Chris' suspicions at first, but finally scolds him for acting childish: this time, Eggman has nothing to do with it. He sends Chris away, forbidding the robots to follow, and they sadly obey.

As Tails and Chuck gather the Chaos Emeralds for the return trip, Chris returns home, still unable to accept the truth.
