Thinking of other games, should non-hazardous gimmicks, like the hang glider and spinning top, also fall under the Obstacles heading? The Sonic Rush Adventure guide book categorizes both helpful and hindering objects as "Gimmicks", so maybe that would be a better catch-all term? Is there a source for this name? I can't see any mention of it in the Japanese manual.
