''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'' has a large selection of over 250 music tracks which can be played in stages, and the player can adjust how likely each available song will play on each stage with the "My Music" feature. 12 of the songs in the game come from ''Sonic'' games, and all of them play on the Green Hill Zone stage. All the songs here are the original versions with the exception of Angel Island Zone, which is a remix made specially for this game. Most of these songs are unlocked with the Green Hill Zone stage, while the songs listed in '''bold''' must be unlocked by collecting CDs or other means after unlocking Green Hill Zone.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (called "Great Battle Smash Brothers X" in Japan) is the third in a series of fighting games featuring Nintendo characters. Unlike the previous two games, this game includes two third party characters, Solid Snake from Metal Gear, and Sonic the Hedgehog. The game also includes a full blown Story Mode, named the Subspace Emissary, written by the same person who wrote the scenarios for Final Fantasy VII, Kazushige Nojima.

Inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog

Character Select Screen.

On October 10, 2007, it was announced on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl official website (Smash Bros. DOJO!!) that Sonic the Hedgehog would be a playable character in the game. Even though he was announced on the Dojo before the game was released in any countries, a player must first unlock Sonic to play as him. There are three methods of doing so:

  • Complete Classic Mode with 10 characters.
  • Play 300 VS. Mode matches. (Occasionally, he randomly appears before the 300 matches).
  • Fight for 10 player-hours or more.
  • In Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, complete the Great Maze stage.

In addition, after unlocking Sonic, a player will automatically unlock the Shadow the Hedgehog Assist Trophy, who slows down time with Chaos Control for everyone except the player who activated the trophy. You also unlock the Green Hill Zone stage to play on.

As a fighter

Half of Sonic's moves come from abilities he has in his own games, while the other half is consisted of moves created solely for the game. As with all other fighters, he has a set of quick and weak moves, strong and powerful moves, special moves and a Final Smash. His special moves are as follows:

  • Neutral special: Homing Attack. Sonic spins in mid-air for a second, and then launches towards the back of the nearest enemy, in an arc. The move can be completed faster by pressing B, at the cost of accuracy.
  • Side special: Spin Dash. Sonic starts Spin Dashing on the ground or mid-air. The longer the B button is held down, the bigger the charge, the faster Sonic will go, and the more he'll move for until he has to stop. When the move is starting, on the ground, Sonic will move backwards for a small bit. After being activated, Sonic will perform a small hop and will only start spinning when he touches the ground. Once spinning, it's possible to switch directions without losing speed.
  • Up Special: Spring Jump. When activated, a red spring spawns under Sonic, and he's sent flying upwards, the spring staying there for around three seconds if the move is used on the ground. This move is mostly used for recovery, as it doesn't normally cause damage, however, if it's activated in mid-air, the spring tumbles downward, which can cause some minor damage.
  • Down Special: Spin Charge. Like his Side Special, except it's charged like in the classic games, by mashing the B button while Down is held. This move also lacks the minor backwards movement and small hop at the start.

His Final Smash turns him into Super Sonic for around 15 seconds. While in this form, he can fly in all directions at very high speeds. If he collides against a character, they receive heavy damage and knockback. The downside to this is that to cause maximum damage, the player should make Sonic fly very fast, which is very hard to control.

Other moves worth mentioning are as follows:

  • Dash attack: Sonic curls into a ball while running, known in his games as the Spin attack.
  • Forward tilt: Horse Kick from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Down tilt: Leg Throw from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Forward Smash: Wind-up Punch from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Dash: His legs perform the figure-eight movements seen when using Super Peel-Out.
  • Ledge attack: Sonic gets up on the stage with a flip-spin attack, resembling his ledge climbing move in Sonic Spinball.
  • Side taunt: Sonic runs in place while saying "You're too slow!". Much like his dash animation, his legs perform the Super Peel-Out figure-eight movement.
  • Wall Jump: Wall Jump from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Idle poses: Sonic will either cross one foot while waving his finger, resembling the European boxart for Sonic the Hedgehog, or he'll tap his foot on the ground, as he does while idling in most classic Sonic games.
  • Jump, Crouch, Edge teeter: The animations resemble the corresponding ones from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Competitively, Sonic is ranked as being a middle-tier character. This is due to his fast movement and attack speeds allowing him to cause damage quickly while making retaliation hard, however, his attacks lack power, and he has no decent finishing move, making KOing opponents a difficult task.

Trophies

Trophies (or Figures in Japan) are collectible items that represent various characters, items, and other elements from the many games released by Nintendo and in the case of Brawl, from third-party franchises Metal Gear Solid and Sonic as well. These collectibles are optional and appear as figurines on a golden stand, providing some information about the collectible displayed. Sonic trophies are displayed to the very end of the gallery and there are twelve of them. Usually the are also given two games, their primary debut game with no console associated and their Nintendo debut game. Exceptions are the Shadow's erroneous game debut (it would be Sonic Adventure 2, not Sonic Heroes), Knuckles' bizarre twin mention of classics (Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles) and finally Blaze's redundant mention of her two Rush series.

Name ID Description
Sonic the Hedgehog 533 The world's fastest hedgehog, who can run at supersonic speeds. Generally speaking, he loves being able to do what he wants and loathes being constrained. Holding still is something he would never consider. He's got a bit of an attitude but can't pass by someone in trouble. When he collects the seven Chaos Emeralds, he transforms into the mighty, gold Super Sonic.

Unlock: Complete Classic Mode on any difficulty as Sonic.

Super Sonic 534 Sonic's Final Smash. The Chaos Emeralds give energy to all living things, and

Sonic's gathered all seven of them, then used their power to transform into Super Sonic. His abilities in this form far surpass his normal ones, and he's even able to fly. He uses a lot of energy in this form, so he can only remain in it for a short time.

Unlock: Complete All-Star Mode on any difficulty as Sonic.

Shadow the Hedgehog 535 Shadow The Hedgehog is a black hedgehog who resembles Sonic. He was created by Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, to be the ultimate life-form. Not only does he look like Sonic, but he has equal abilities. He has great skill with the space-time warping technique called Chaos Control. To reach his goals, he'll use any means necessary.
Tails "Miles" Prower 536 A friendly fox with two tails whose true name is Miles Prower. He can fly for a limited time by spinning his tails rapidly. Originally impressed by the sight of the speedy Sonic, Tails became his sidekick, rarely leaving his side. To assist Sonic in staying one up on Dr. Eggman, Tails utilizes his knowledge of electrical engineering to create mechanical devices.
  • SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2
  • (GameCube) SONIC HEROES

Unlock: Walk 10,000m.

Dr. Eggman 537 A self-proclaimed scientific genius. Dr. Eggman sports an IQ of 300 and wants to conquer the world and build his evil empire of Eggmanland. An expert in his field, Dr. Eggman places robotics over all else in life--a reflection of his selfish personality. He doesn't know when to quit and always comes back for more no matter how many times he is defeated by Sonic.

Unlock: Collect 500 stickers.

Knuckles the Echidna 538 A powerful red echidna also known by his full name, Knuckles the Echidna. Knuckles resides on Angel Island, where he guards the Master Emerald. Both friend and rival of Sonic, Knuckles is a martial-arts expert who can break through rocks with his spiked fists. In addition, he can climb walls and use the wind to glide through the air.
  • SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3
  • SONIC & KNUCKLES
Amy 539 A Sonic-obsessed pink hedgehog whose full name is Amy Rose. Amy is Sonic's self-appointed girlfriend. She is almost always optimistic and cheerful, and while she motivates her friends, she also shows aggressive tendencies, like when she uses her massive Piko Piko Hammer. Speaking of which, her hammer's hiding spot remains unknown to this day.
Blaze the Cat 540 A princess from another dimension and guardian of the Sol Emeralds, also known as Blaze The Cat. Blaze is calm but often seems to be dealing with some inner turmoil. She's also extremely hard on herself, and as a result, she comes across as somewhat shy. She learns to open up after meeting Sonic and his crew and can use the Sol Emeralds to become Burning Blaze.
Chao 541 A type of creature that can absorb and learn skills and traits from other life-forms, adapting its shape as it does. This results in vast variations in appearance, behavior, and personality. Chao are generally very cute, and their mannerisms are pleasant and relaxing. Chao Gardens are a good place to find them, but they also inhabit areas with freshwater.
  • (GameCube) SONIC ADVENTURE DX: Director's Cut
Cream the Rabbit 542 A young rabbit who is always accompanied by her Chao friend, Cheese. Once a member of Team Rose, she's a spirited go-getter who always gives it her all. Her polite and courteous manner is thought to be a result of her mother's strict discipline. Cream can use her large ears to fly, and her Chao Attack, where she launches Cheese like a missile, is a powerful weapon.
Jet the Hawk 543 A hawk who is the leader of the Babylon Rogues and also goes by the moniker "The Legendary Wind Rider." When it comes to Extreme Gear racing, there is no one better. Jet's extremely competitive and takes tremendous pride in winning, so you know things are going to be exciting when he takes on the speedy Sonic in an Extreme Gear battle.
Silver the Hedgehog 544 A hedgehog who traveled back in time to defeat the Iblis Trigger and therefore alter the future. Silver has a positive attitude and a strong sense of justice. He has telekinetic powers that allow him to control physical objects, including abilities to freeze or shock enemies, which he uses to fight for peace and justice.

Stickers

Stickers are other type of collectibles, that can be added to a background and made into a collage. They are found much more commonly than trophies: they appear randomly in normal Brawls (uless items are turned off), can be won through Spectator Mode over Wi-Fi, obtained by defeating minor enemies in the Subspace Emissary, won in Coin Launcher, or beaten out of Sandbag. The main purpose of these stickers is to give characters certain advantages in the Subspace Emissary and they cannot be used in other modes such as Brawls or the Stadium. For the Sonic franchise, there are twenty nine stickers and they can be found at the end of the gallery. There is no exclusive artwork and mostly it's the same as the one found in Sonic Channel, but Super Sonic's sticker doesn't have the glow that the image displayed below has. Images not shown below are Sonic US version (the one on Sonic's gamebox), the group of Chao from Sonic Channel and Erazor.
