Special Stage
In Sonic 1, if you complete Acts one or two with fifty rings or more, a gigantic ring will appear above the signpost. Jump into it and you'll be transported to a rotating Special Stage where your goal is to find and touch a Chaos Emerald.

While you are in the Special Stage, there are several different blocks you need to watch out for. Among them are bumpers (red), which cause Sonic to bounce off; plain blocks (red and white), which Sonic can jump off of; speed-changing blocks (red and white stripes with the word "UP" or "DOWN" printed on them), which change the speed at which the stage rotates; Reverse blocks (black with the letter "R"), which reverse the direction the stage rotates; and the misleadingly named "Goal" blocks (flashing red and blue), which ends the Special Stage in failure. Of special note are the diamond-shaped blocks that surround the Chaos Emerald; these blocks require multiple hits to destroy; these are only encountered in the proximity of a Chaos Emerald.

Whether Sonic gets the Chaos Emerald or not, he will score 100 points for each ring, and a Continue if he gets 50 rings or more.

Note: Sonic can still get an extra life for 100 rings.
