Sonic the Hedgehog Presents: Princess Sally is a three issue mini-series published by Archie Comics. Focusing on the character Princess Sally Acorn, it was the first mini-series to spin off from the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic book by the same publisher, and the second mini-series in general. It notably features the first appearances of the Rebel Underground, Auto-Automatons and the group of Freedom Fighter trainees that would later become the Substitute Legion of Freedom Fighters.

Premise

Following the events of the "Deadliest of the Species: Prologue" story from Sonic the Hedgehog #20, Princess Sally Acorn comes across Geoffrey St. John, a former member of the Kingdom of Acorn's Royal Secret Service and the current leader of a group known as the Rebel Underground. As he joins Sally and her group of Freedom Fighter trainees on their mission to destroy Robotropolis' energy substations, unease, mistrust and questions regarding loyalty begin to spread within the group.

The mini-series features numerous homages to the James Bond franchise, courtesy of writers Mike Kanterovich and Ken Penders.[4]

Legacy

Kanterovich and Penders considered the series' final storyline their least favorite of the three that they had proposed,[5] and neither them or Sega were satisfied with the final product.[4] The series sold less than the later Sonic's Friendly Nemesis Knuckles mini-series and was perceived as a failure by Archie,[6] who saw its poor success as a reason not to target female audiences with later Sonic publications.[7]

Several concepts from the series' earlier storyline pitches eventually re-emerged in later stories; Sally's mother Alicia Acorn made her official debut in Sonic Super Special #2, while Sonic the Hedgehog #58 featured one of the Freedom Fighters' parents, Armand D'Coolette, as an evil Robian leader.

In 2013, the entire mini-series was reprinted in Sonic Select Book Seven alongside "Deadliest of the Species: Prologue", "My Special Friend" from Knuckles the Echidna #29 and "The World Can Wait" from Sonic the Hedgehog #222.
