Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island is the fourth spin-off mini-series based on the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series by IDW Publishing. This mini-series focuses on Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower as they find themselves marooned on an island populated with old Badniks and foes such as Mecha Sonic Mk. II and Mecha Knuckles.
History
Daniel Barnes, who had previously wrote the Weapons story in Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2022, was contacted by David Mariotte and Riley Farmer to write a four-issue mini-series for Sonic the Hedgehog when IDW Publishing had a gap in their release schedule. He was told right after he finished writing that story, before the artwork was even penciled, that there was a wide open slate for a four-issue mini-series. It was originally planned to be filled by a mini-series that would tie up loose ends from the main series, but the main story itself resolved all those plot ends, creating the new gap in the schedule.[1][2]
Daniel Barnes pitched to them several ideas for this new mini-series to fill in this gap, and one of them ended up becoming Scrapnik Island. Sega really liked the idea so it was chosen. The mini-series was originally supposed to release early in the Fall, but Daniel Barnes asked them to release it in October instead for Halloween.
The mini-series ran from October 2022 to January 2023. All four issues were reprinted as a trade paperback novel in August 2023.
