Sonic X (Leapster game)
System(s): Leapfrog Leapster
Genre: Educational

Sonic X is an early childhood educational cartridge for the Leapfrog Leapster system. The objective of the game is for Sonic and Chris Thorndyke to rescue their friends Tails, Knuckles, and Amy and defeat Doctor Eggman by solving mathematical equations. Character sprites are taken directly from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The game takes place across three different zones: Station Square, Angel Island, and Eggman's Base. Each of these zones consist of 3 acts. There is also a area called mini-games, which has a total of 3 mini-games in it.

Gameplay

The game plays like a traditional Sonic game and allows players to run around levels and leap platforms. Rings are scattered around the levels which can be collected. Problem solving is also incorporated as there are question marks throughout the level that can only be passed after solving a mathematical equations such as counting, matching numbers, addition and subtraction. There are also occasions where Eggman's Badniks will pick Sonic up and ask questions about rings, and the pen must be used to answer the questions.

Levels

Station Square

This level is the first encountered and must be cleared before the rest open up. This mathmatical equations of this level include Number Identification, Counting, Sequencing, Number/Object Association, and skip counting by 2's 5's and 10's.

Angel Island

This level takes place in a forest type level with heavy growth. The mathmatical equations of this level is primarily addition.

Eggman's Base

A Baselike level where the structure is made up of a blue material. The mathmatical equations of this level is primarily subtraction.

Mini Games

Eggman's Super Sucky Machine

This level involves Eggman's Super Sucky Machine. Numbers must be dragged into the tube of this machine with the stylus and they will be sucked to the top of the screen. There are three different mini-games involving this which are Counting, Number Sequencing, and Operations. Counting involves counting the number of certain objects which appear on-screen. Number Sequencing calls for numbers to be placed in the correct order. Operations has players solve addition and subtractions problems.

Math Robot Round-up

Solve addition problems by circling the correct number of on-screen objects with the stylus. These objects move so it's not as easy as it sounds. After circling the correct number of objects shake the box with the stylus and collect the golden rings.

Aerial Automations

Solve subscription problems by tapping the on-screen objects with the stylus. The objects that are touched remain onscreen while the others fly away.
