Story
Following traces of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic, Tails and Amy fly the Tornado towards the Starfall Islands, an archipelago of islands forgotten by all. As they were approaching the islands, a wormhole suddenly appears in the sky, sucking Sonic in and separating him from his friends. Upon waking up, Sonic finds himself stuck in Cyber Space, a digital space resembling places from his memories. He escapes, and finds himself on Kronos Island, one of the Starfall Islands. Guided by a mysterious voice, Sonic must now gather the Chaos Emeralds.
When Sonic attempts to save his friends, he gains Cyber Corruption. This corruption causes him great pain but also gives him new powers which he uses to defeat the gigantic Titans who protect the emeralds. Sonic runs into a holographic girl named Sage, who wants him to leave the islands. She was created by Dr. Eggman, who is also trapped in Cyber Space after tampering with the technology of the Ancients. On Ares Island, Sonic runs into his friendly rival Knuckles who was teleported here from Angel Island. The mysterious voice who has guided Sonic across the islands is freed from Cyber Space on Rhea Island. This monster is a planet killer who the Ancients tried to stop long ago by sealing it away. Dr. Eggman reluctantly teams up with Sonic to stop it and save the world.
Another Story
Sage tells Sonic of a way to defeat their shared foe. By sending Amy, Knuckles and Tails out to gather the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can then focus his efforts on getting control over his corruption. Sonic enters a trial from the leader of the Ancients, Master King. Once the trial is completed, Sonic's energy is forged into a new power. Master King warns Sonic that the power was not meant for him and if used recklessly it will leave him entirely. Sonic is later forced to ignore Master King's warning and uses the full power of his corruption to defeat the nightmare. As the day is saved, Sage goes home with Dr. Eggman and Amy, Knuckles and Tails decide to go on new paths separated from Sonic.
Gameplay
Sonic Frontiers is an Open Zone game in which the player is tasked with gathering the Chaos Emeralds inside of large sandbox/open world style areas. In Sonic Frontiers' core gameplay loop, first the player must defeat Guardians in combat to obtain Portal Gears in order to enter Cyber Space. By clearing Cyber Space stages the player can obtain Vault Keys, which are used to open Chaos Emerald vaults and obtain the emerald inside. Once the player has obtained all seven emeralds, Sonic will go Super Sonic in order to defeat the island's Titan.
Sonic has a large number of new skills given to him by the cyber energy he gets from opening Cyber Cages. The player uses these abilities within combat against the many ancient robots scattered across the islands. To free his friends, Sonic collects Memory Tokens of them on each island and uses these tokens to talk with them. When Sonic preforms a combo on enemies, he can enter a state called "Phantom Rush", which increases his attack power by one point two percent. Sonic can visit Big the Cat in Fishing Spots, where he can collect fish and BBQ some meat. With the fish, Sonic can trade with Big to obtain items, including the Egg Memos where he can learn more about Sage and the Ancients from Dr. Eggman's recordings in Cyber Space. While fishing, Sonic can obtain scrolls for the Hermit Koco and Elder Koco which allows the player to fast travel to the two of them.
In the Open Zone areas, the player has many options for objectives to complete aside from just collecting the Chaos Emeralds and Memory Tokens. Each island has it's own set of challenges which the player has to complete in order to fill out the map screen of the area. Completing these challenges spawns grind rails, making it easier to travel around the islands. Filling out the map reveals the locations of other objectives for the player to do. Some challenges are only available at night time however, marked with a moon icon, so the player must wait if it's day time before completing them. Once the player fills out the map screen, the option to fast travel to Cyber Space and Fishing Spot portals becomes available.
One of the core gameplay mechanics for this title is the Cyloop. It can be used to solve puzzles and defeat enemies in the Open Zone areas. Some points on each island are marked with treasure chest signs, by Cylooping around them, the player can receive items; such as Portal Gears, Vault Keys and Memory Tokens. By drawing an infinity symbol with the Cyloop's light trail, Sonic can get an Infinite Boost.[21] Along with getting a Power Boost by collecting the maximum amount of rings, Sonic can travel at lightning fast speeds. Sonic can get the Power Boost permanently without having to collect rings by upgrading with Elder Koco through giving them lost Koco back. Events called "Starfall" can occur during the game which respawns items and enemies Sonic has defeated. A slot machine appears during these moments, which the player can activate by collecting Star Pieces. These slot machines gives Sonic the chance to obtain more Koco and Purple Coins for Fishing Spots.
In Cyber Space stages, the gameplay becomes more like previous modern Sonic titles. In them, Sonic can no longer use his new Cyber Corruption skills. The areas in Cyber Space are based on Sonic's memories of Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary and other locations he has visited in the past. The player has four missions in Cyber Space stages to complete; reach the goal, clear with Rank S time, collect rings and find all of the Red Star Rings. By clearing all of these missions, the player is rewarded with more Vault Keys, making it easier to obtain Chaos Emeralds.

History
Prerelease
At the time of the game's announcement during the Sonic Central presentation it was tentatively named the Sonic Project for 2022. However, only hours following the presentation's debut, web and video hackers would uncover references to "Sonic Rangers", likely being opted by Sega as the game's title until the official title was eventually revealed.
Sonic Frontiers had a large presence at Tokyo Game Show 2022, with an attention-getting Sonic the Hedgehog inflatable and a number of stations where attendees could play the game.
