While the Special Stage cannot be accessed in regular play, it is accessible from the Zone Select screen. As one can see, all of these Special Stages had completely different layouts.

It is also possible to play as Tails in these Special Stages, which he cannot do in the final.

Final game

All of the Special Stages in this build open with a title card, whereas they didn't in the final. As they weren't intended to have title cards, all of them only say "ZONE".

All of the bottomless pits in the Special Stage will kill the player in this prototype. In the final, falling into a pit will kick the player out of the Special Stage without a life loss.

Moments into the first Special Stage, and the player can see how radically different the visuals are for sky-themed Special Stages compared to the final.
