The Snail is a cut badnik that appeared in Emerald Hill Zone. Its design is an overgrown snail with spikes at the top of its body. When the badnik sees Sonic, it charges at him by speeding up. It can be destroyed by simply jumping on it. It was replaced in Sonic 2 Beta 4 by the Coconuts monkey badnik. Its behaviour may have been transferred to the Rhinobot badnik in Angel Island Zone.

It can be placed in Emerald Hill Zone using Debug mode in the 2013 version of Sonic 2.

A Snail with a different behavior pattern can be seen in concept art. This version of the Snail would cling to walls, and then fall to the ground and roll after the players character as they pass it. It was to appear in Hill Top Zone.
