NOTE: If playing as a character in a level that they are not designed for, by default the objects will not be present. This can be corrected, though. Simply copy the appropriate file and rename it accordingly and the objects will appear in the level with that character.

The Object Format

Header

Every file starts with a 32 byte (20 in hex) header in the following format, where red is an unsigned long containing the total amount of objects in the level.

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

(If you ever forget the amount of objects, take the offset of the very last object, divide in hex by 20, and convert to decimal.)

Body

Objects are defined after the header in the following format:

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
  • The first byte is the object type. You can find what value corresponds to each object here.
  • You can leave the next byte alone.
  • This unsigned short is the X rotation of the object in BAMS (Binary Angle Measurement System).
  • This unsigned short is the Y rotation of the object in BAMS.
  • This unsigned short is the Z rotation of the object in BAMS.
    • Note: To convert from degrees to BAMS: (degrees * 182) = BAMS.
  • This float is the X position of the object.
  • This float is the Y position of the object.
  • This float is the Z position of the object.
  • This section is for the object's specific properties. Refer to later in this guide to set these. This section does not apply to most objects.

To get the XYZ position of the object you want to place, use Cheat Engine to look up offsets 03B2CAB0, 03B2CAB4, and 03B2CAB8 of sonic.exe - Sonic's current X, Y, and Z position, respectively. Play the game and move sonic to the place you want the object to be and pause the game. Then, paste these numbers into your hex editor as a float.

Model Editing

I HURD U LIEK TO EDIT MODALS?

Alright, so you want to edit models in SADX.

First off you need to think of what character you want to edit.

Let's say you want to do Sonic. His head model is name group5674388.

The 5674388 is the decimal offset in CHRMODELS.DLL you need to go to. Use a calculator to convert this number to hexadecimal; in this case the value is 569594.

Open CHRMODELS.DLL in a hex editor. Open the "go to" window (usually done by pressing Ctrl+G). If your editor supports decimal you can just paste in the original value, or you can choose hexadecimal and use that number. Most models end in something like _4 or _20; you only need the numbers before the dash.

Once you have gone to the offset for Sonic's head, you will see 04 00 00 00 (or 0400 0000, depending on how your hex editor is set up; every 2 numbers/letters is one hex byte).

So you want to skip the first 4 bytes, in this case that is 04 00 00 00. You should now see 68 95 56 10 (or another value for a different model). These four bytes are the next offset you want to go to, but they are in little endian and have had 10000000 added to them. Reverse the order of the bytes and subtract 10000000 to get 00569568, and then go to this address.

This time we do NOT skip the first 4 bytes, we select the first 4 bytes which are 78 73 56 10 and once again, reverse the byte order and subtract 10000000. You should get 00567378.

Go to this offset. You are now at the model =D. what you need to do now, is export your edited model in .obj format. (When editing the model do not use symmetry modifiers or mirror the model! You must edit each vertex by hand, you can't mirror it)

Drop your .obj file on obj2vt.exe and you will get an out.vt. Open the out.vt in a hex editor and check how many bytes it has. Off the top of my head, I believe sonic has around 4,000 something. well, check how many bytes that has, and go back to CHRMODELS.DLL. Select a block, the same size as the other file and hit the delete key. Go back to out.vt and select everything and copy it. Paste it in CHRMODELS.DLL were you deleted the old model.

Save, and it should work.

Sonic "You won't get away with this, you madman!"
Eggman "I will!"
Eggman "You're no match for Chaos, even though he's not perfected yet."
Eggman "Okay Chaos, destroy them all! Immediately!"
Eggman "No way! I can't believe this!"
Knuckles "Sonic!"
Sonic "Hey there, Knuckles. Glad you finally made it! I thought you got lost or something."
Sonic "Stop! Come back here!"

Sonic "Agh, I hate Eggman!"
Sonic "Where's this?"
Sonic "Hmm?"
Sonic "That light!"
Sonic "I think it's trying to show me something."
Sonic "Wow, what's this?"
Sonic "A mural!"
Tikal "Why?"
Tikal "Why did this have to happen?"
Tikal "It's terrible!"
Tikal "I must stop this, now!"
Sonic "What's this place?"
Sonic "Where am I? This is really weird."
Sonic "What was that all about?"
Sonic "I don't think I'm dreaming here."
Sonic "Hm?"
Sonic "Eggman!"
Sonic "What's he doing here?"
Sonic "Oh nevermind, this time I'll get him good!"
Eggman "Well, if it isn't my pal, Sonic."
Eggman "I'm surprised you made it this far."
Sonic "Hold it right there, Eggman!"
Sonic "What's up, Knuckles?"

Tails "All righty, we're in!"
Sonic "We gotta land on the Egg Carrier."
Tails "Whoops."
Tails "Uh, I forgot something."

Tails "There's no landing gear in this mode."
Sonic "What?!"
Tails "Everything's working great!"
Tails "All systems go, full speed ahead!"
Tails "Uh oh, what's this?"

Tails "Going down!"
Tails "Ahhhh!"
Tails "Look out below!"
Sonic "Boy, you're lucky I saw you come down."
Sonic "So what went wrong, anyway?"
Sonic "It's not like you to crash like that."
Tails "Yeah, it's just that I'm testing a new prototype power supply, and it's not fully compatible yet."
Sonic "You can always borrow my plane, the Tornado, if you want."
Tails "Thanks Sonic, but if I can make this work, it'll run circles around yours!"
Tails "Check out this power supply!"
Sonic "It's a Chaos Emerald! No way!"
Tails "I was lucky to find one of the seven Chaos Emeralds."
Tails "They have unlimited mystic power."
Tails "Now I wanna harness that power to fly my plane."
Tails "Let's go to my workshop in the Mystic Ruins and I'll show you what I've been working on."
Tails "We'll go to the station, hop on a train, and get there in no time!"
Eggman "Well, well, well, if it isn't Sonic and Tails."
Tails "It's Eggman!"
Eggman "Silence!"
Eggman "I am Dr. Robotnik, the most cunning scientific genius in the world!"
Sonic "Yeah, right, Dr. Eggman!"
Eggman "Enough! I've been working on a master plan, but now it's time to put it to work!"
Tails "That usually means trouble, coming from you!"
Eggman "Don't even try to interfere this time!"
Eggman "Give me that Chaos Emerald, or else!"
Tails "Or else what, huh?"
Eggman "Or else I'll take it from you, the hard way!"
Tails "That was just too easy!"
Eggman "Gotcha!"
Tails "Hey, he snagged it!" (?)
Eggman "Chaos could use a little snack!"
Tails "Who's Chaos?"
Sonic "That's the monster I saw the other day."
Tails "Uh, monster?"
Eggman "Yes, yes, yes, it's really happening, just as the stone tablets said it would!"
Eggman "Ha ha ha ha, hear this Sonic!"
Eggman "Chaos' strength increases every time I give him a Chaos Emerald."
Eggman "All he needs is seven Emeralds to become invincible."
Eggman "Then, he will turn Station Square into rubble!"
Eggman "Upon which I will build the ultimate city, Robotnikland!"
Eggman "Ha ha ha ha! You ready, Chaos? Let's go find the next Emerald. Come on!"
Tails "Thank goodness they're gone. Good riddance!"
Sonic "We can't let that monster get any bigger. It could get ugly!"
Tails "You're right. Chaos must be stopped."
Tails "And he can be if we keep him away from more Emeralds, right?"
Tails "So whaddya say, Sonic? Let's find the Chaos Emeralds before Eggman does."
Tails breath "What's that?"
Eggman "Get away from there!"
Tails "The Chaos Emerald!"
Tails "Ahhhhh!"
Eggman "Nighty night! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
Tails "Eggman..."
Tails "Ugh, Sonic, what happened to the Chaos Emerald?"
Sonic "Ah, Eggman got one of them, but the other one's safe."
Sonic "He must be getting desperate."
Tails "Now the Emerald count is two to one and Eggman's winning!"
Tails "Let's get a move on!"
Tails "Hey Knuckles, what's up?"
Tails "Whaddya doin', Knuckles?"
Knuckles "Don't mess with me now!"
Knuckles "Just hand over the Emeralds you have, quick!"
Tails "No way, Knuckles!"
Tails "Whoa!"
Tails "Oh no, the Emeralds!"
Eggman "Ha ha ha ha ha ha! And they're all mine!"
Tails "Eggman's back!"
Tails "He's got the Emeralds!"
Eggman "You two are bumbling idiots, you know that?!"
Knuckles "Hey, those are...the Chaos Emeralds!"
Eggman "You are so easily tricked!"
Eggman "All I did was wait for you to bring it to me!"
Tails "What the heck is he talking about anyway?"
Sonic "Don't you realize when you've been tricked?"
Knuckles "Tricked? No one makes a fool out of me!"
Sonic "Way to go, Knucklehead!"
Eggman "Ha ha ha ha! Four! Count them, four Emeralds!"
Eggman "I summon Chaos! Come forth!"
Eggman "Here, eat up!"
Tails "Oh, no! It's changing again!"
Tails "We gotta stop this, fast!"
Eggman "Behold my floating masterpiece, the Egg Carrier!"
Eggman "But it pales in comparison to the power of Chaos!"
Tails "Hey! We can't let them get away!"
