A Red Star Ring as depicted in Sonic Runners.

Red Star RingsMedia:SonicGenerations 360 UK manual.pdf[1] (レッドスターリング Reddo Sutā Ringu), more commonly referred to as Red Rings and originally Special RingsMedia:SonicColours Wii US manual.pdf[2], are collectible Ring-like items found in a number of games, starting with Sonic Colours. There are often at least five to collect in a stage, and they are often used to unlock special bonuses.

Game appearances

Sonic Colours

Red Star Rings make their debut in Sonic Colours under the name of Special Rings. In both versions, five of them are hidden in every Act in the game with the exception of boss Acts and Terminal Velocity. Some of these rings are located in easy locations while some will need the use of a Color Power and some are in hard-to-reach locations. Collecting one will earn the player a 30,000-point bonus.

Collecting them in the Wii version will unlock new stages in Game Land, and eventually allow the player to collect the Chaos Emeralds and unlock Super Sonic, while collecting all of them in the DS version will unlock Infinite Boost.

Sonic Generations

Red Star Rings make a second appearance as collectable items in the console/PC versions of Sonic Generations, with five to collect in each Act. Each one collected will unlock music or an image in the Collection Room, while collecting all five in an Act will unlock a new skill. If the player talks to one of Sonic's rescued friends in the White Space when they have the icon of the Red Star Ring above them, they will give them a hint as to where their respective Act's Red Star Rings are.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, there is one Red Star Ring to collect in each Act. The only purpose they have in this game is to unlock an achievement/trophy for collecting them all, and nothing else.

Sonic Jump (2012)

In the 2012 remake of Sonic Jump, there are three Red Star Rings to collect in each act.

Sonic Dash

In Sonic Dash and Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, Red Star Rings serve as the games' premium currency. They appear early along the first run of each day, but they can also still be obtained by completing missions, completing the Daily Challenge for five days in a row, winning them from the Daily Spin, logging in to Facebook, or by purchasing them via microtransactions. They can be used to unlock new characters or to buy retries for whenever the player fails.

Sonic Lost World

In Sonic Lost World, five Red Star Rings can be found in each Zone in every world except for Hidden World and the DLC levels. Some of the rings require the use of Parkour or Color Powers to reach, while some will require the player to chase a bell around and ring it several times. In the Wii U/PC version, collecting all the Red Rings in a world will earn the player a Chaos Emerald that will unlock Super Sonic when all 7 are collected, while in the 3DS version the Red Rings will unlock bonus Zones.

Also in the Wii U/PC version, the player can earn a radar by completing Omochao's missions, which makes it easier to locate Red Star Rings.

Sonic Runners

Like with Sonic Dash, Red Star Rings served as premium currency in Sonic Runners. They could be earned in very small batches during runs or boss fights, but would mostly be received through daily bonuses, completing episodes or microtransactions. The player could spend Red Star Rings on playing the Premium Roulette to earn Buddies or extra characters, or exchange them for Rings. During a stage, the player could continue a run through after losing once by paying five Red Star Rings.

Occasionally, the game had campaigns, sometimes in acknowledgement of certain events, that offered the player additional Red Star Rings if they logged in on Sonic Runners within a certain time period or completed certain tasks.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, Red Star Rings appear once again as collectibles that can be found in levels. In this game, they serve to unlock more clothing and Wispons to customize the Avatar with, among other things such as EX Stages. When all five Red Star Rings have been collected in a level, the player can replay the level to collect Number Rings and Silver Moon Rings.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

Like with Sonic Dash and Sonic Runners, Red Star Rings serve as premium currency in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. They can be earned in a random amount from Free Chests and Victory Chests, or can be purchased with real money. The player can then use Red Star Rings to buy Loot Chests, Rings or Daily Deals.
