Micro Mobius is a virtual reality world in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, introduced in 1994 as the setting for the unreleased 32X platformer Sonic Mars. Existing solely in the digital realm, Micro Mobius is inhabited by characters known as Mips, and are ruled over by the benevolent King Cyberooski and his daughter Tiara.

Development

Micro Mobius, alongside Tiara and Cyberooski, were originally created for Sonic Mars back when the project was still intended as a tie-in game to the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series.

While unconfirmed, the creation of Micro Mobius as a virtual reality world may have been intentionally chosen to best work with the Sega 32X hardware. Playing to the system's polygon capabilities, most stages would have featured Sonic running across a series of 3D floor tiles. Knowing that any more 3D processing would likely tax the 32X, Zones were designed entirely of these floor tiles, keeping on-screen rendering to a minimum while keeping within the bounds of a digital landscape.

When Mars was moved from the 32X to the Saturn and became Sonic X-treme, the setting of Micro Mobius, and much of Kosaka's setting, were dropped from the project entirely.

Description

Sonic Mars

Sonic Retro emblem.svg Main article: Sonic Mars#Story
"While Sonic is away checking on a security alarm in a remote part of the Great Forest, his pals (Sally, Bunnie, Tails and Knuckles) have discovered a strange message from within one of Robotnik's super computers.

(Dr. Robotnik is trying to take over a computer VR world (Micro Mobius) and the message is a plea for help from its peaceful inhabitants.)

Sonic returns to Knothole to discover that Robotnik has captured his friends and taken them into his VR world.

Sonic is tasked with trying to liberate his friends and thwart Robotnik's plan to completely "reformat" Micro Mobius."

During the events of Sonic Mars, the Freedom Fighters intercept a distress call from Micro Mobius. Soon, Sonic returns from a patrol to find Knothole Village destroyed by Robotnik's Raiderbots, and his friends captured. He quickly makes his way to Robotnik's lair, where he accidentally gets teleported into Micro Mobius, beginning the game.
