The first Metal Knuckles appeared in Sonic R as a hidden opponent for Reactive Factory. Once beaten, Metal Knuckles is added to the selection of playable characters.

A similar robot appears in Sonic Advance as the Angel Island Zone boss. At first, the boss is identical to Knuckles (except for slightly different colouring), but after a few hits his disguise falls apart, revealing his metal interior.

The very first robot Knuckles - Metallix MKIII - actually appeared in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic.
