Mecha Sonic

Revision as of 13:26, 12 July 2008 by Dan (talk | contribs) (Sonic 3)

The name Mecha Sonic is sometimes used interchangeably with Metal Sonic, though such a mix-up involves (at the least) two different personae of the character, most would say there are two separate characters involved. His Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (both versions) incarnation is often referred to as Silver Sonic. This boss is also occasionally referred to as Bionic Sonic, a name popularized by Andrusi, who found it on a card in a pack of Sonic the Hedgehog bubble gum. In the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie Comic issue #39, Sonic is dubbed "Mecha Sonic" when he's captured by Nack and roboticized by Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic 2

Sonic fighting Mecha Sonic in Death Egg Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit version).

8-bit Version

The first appearance of Mecha Sonic is the metallic robot that Sonic fights in Scrambled Egg Zone on the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Once defeated, Mecha Sonic releases the sixth and final Chaos Emerald.

This version of the robot is an ideal imitation of Sonic, mimicking all of his abilities, although strangely Mecha Sonic has a spin dash attack and Sonic does not in that game. When jumping Sonic and Mecha Sonic bounce off each other, making for an fast and hectic battle. Mecha Sonic is also equipped with a sharp scissors-type object, which sometimes protrudes from its torso when standing still.

Genesis Version

The robot that appears in Death Egg Zone on the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis has three types of movement:

  • Run in a direction, slide and turn around, then come back to start of movement
  • Curl up into a ball and roll across the screen (similar to Sonic's spindash)
  • Curl up into a ball, then jump across the screen
    • At some point, needles are shot out during the jump.

Sonic & Knuckles

Mecha Sonic, as seen in Sonic & Knuckles.

The robot Sonic in Sonic & Knuckles is usually referred to as Mecha Sonic also.

In Sonic & Knuckles there are four different encounters with Mecha Sonic. They all take place in Sky Sanctuary Zone. He first appears with a ball and chain weapon similar to the one Robotnik uses in the first Sonic the Hedgehog. Later he appears with 8 bubble-like shields similar to a boss battle in Sonic 2 on the third act of Metropolis Zone. The next encounter is similar to the battle with him in the Death Egg in Sonic 2 except for a new backwards dash attack. If playing as Knuckles there is a fourth battle. Mecha Sonic will go super by absorbing power from the Master Emerald. During this battle he dashes back and forth occasionally diving downward or shooting glowing orbs. He occasionally has to recharge his power by landing on the Master Emerald, this leaves him vulnerable to attack.

Sonic the Fighters

In Sonic the Fighters, a new rocket-like Sonic robot called Mecha Sonic Model No.29 appeared in the intro cutscene. This robot is also programmed into the game as a fully playable character, though it can only be enabled by hacking. When played as, the robot is called RocketMetal. One of RocketMetal’s moves is to turn into a rocket and shoot forward; this is also one of the standard Metal Sonic’s moves in the game.

Sonic Adventure

A Sonic robot is seen in Sonic Adventure, floating inside a green tube at Dr. Eggman's hideout in the Mystic Ruins, along with Metal Sonic himself in a different tube in the same room. It has the same appearance as the version of the Mecha Sonic that was originally fought aboard the Death Egg as the penultimate boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Genesis

Its design was used for the character of Silver Sonic II in the Sonic comics.

Sonic Pocket Adventure

Mecha Sonic returned to his original 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 incarnation in Sonic Pocket Adventure as the boss of Aerobase Zone. It is almost identical to its first encounter except it had the added ability to dash backwards, like it did in Sonic & Knuckles.
