Boss: Robotnik (Labyrinth Zone Boss 8-bit)
Underwater areas: Yes

Labyrinth Zone was the fourth zone on Sonic the Hedgehog for Game Gear and Sega Master System, and the second one based on a zone from the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

Synopsis

Most of the level is underwater. The graphics are nearly identical to the Genesis version, however the background music is completely different from its 16-bit counterpart. Sonic has limited air in most of these levels. When a counter appears above his head, you know it's time to find an air bubble.

Walkthrough

Act One - This is the introductory level to the zone. You begin in the maze area of the labyrinth (no water). Falling onto the slides will send you crashing into the watery depths. Don't run out of air, or Sonic will lose a life. Some platforms will carry Sonic up to higher ledges. Get off them before they hit the ceiling; if you don't, Sonic won't be happy with you. The ending of the level is above land.

Act Two - Not too unlike Act One. Just make it to the end of the level.

Act Two - Chaos Emerald - The Chaos Emerald for this level is found toward the end of the act within a bed of spikes. To reach it, you can take a invincible box, which is located a little bit earlier. The box is supposed to last until you get the emerald; however, if you run out of invincible stars, you must jump onto the spikes to lose your rings, or your shield if you have one. After this you become momentarily invincible (intermittent) , during which time you can quickly run into the spike bed, grab the emerald and run.

Act Three - The battle against Dr. Robotnik. Sonic begins underwater in this level, however he has an unlimited supply of air. When you reach Dr. Robotnik, you will notice two banks on either side of the screen. there are three spaces in which Robotnik can emerge: one on the bottom, and two on the top at left and right sides of the screen. Robotnik appears from one of the gaps. Jump on or under his pod to deal damage, but watch out! If Robotnik emerges from the bottom space, he will shoot bullets at you. But if he appears from either of the top spaces, he will send a missile towards Sonic. These attacks are easily dodged, though good timing is necessary due to reduced mobility underwater. After 8 hits, his craft explodes.
