Heavy Shinobi (boss)
Game: Sonic Mania
Level: Press Garden Zone
Hits to defeat: 8

The Heavy Shinobi (ヘビーシノビ)Media:SonicMania consoles JP manual.pdf[1] is one of the Hard Boiled Heavies and the fifth major boss fought in Sonic Mania. The player confronts him at the end of Press Garden Zone Act 2.

Strategy

After appearing, the Heavy Shinobi will jump around the arena throwing Asteron badniks like shuriken. These badniks will damage the player on contact, or if avoided will stick into the floor of the arena. Any stuck Asterons can be destroyed with a Spin Attack; otheriwse, they will explode after a few seconds, shooting their spiked tips in five directions when they do so.

If the player attempts to hit the Heavy Shinobi when he's on the ground, he will use his katana to freeze the player into a block of ice just like the ones found throughout the Zone's second Act - as with these, pressing buttons repeatedly will allow the player to free themselves from the ice. If the player has a Fire Shield, they will harmlessly bounce off without being frozen.

If the player attacks while the Heavy Shinobi is jumping, he will fall to the floor and become stunned for a few seconds, during which the player can damage him with a Spin Attack. The second hit will cause the Heavy to automatically attack with his Katana and resume his attack pattern.

Eight successful hits will defeat the Heavy Shinobi, after which he'll jump out of the arena and escape. The trees on both sides of the arena will then collapse, after which the player can proceed to the Capsule and finish the Zone.
