Act 2, however, has a whole new art style based on the prototype version of Green Hill Zone from the Tokyo Toy Show 1990 demo. The background presents distant mountains, now much closer. The player begins in the cave at the end of the first act. The lower areas feature rock formations with smaller vegetation and new models of totems, now larger, following the same pattern as the smaller ones. The stage follows with a series of gimmicks and other new things compared to its original version. Among them is the use of zip lines and small underwater areas like in the 8-bit version of Green Hill Zone. In addition, the spiky bridges can now be burned with a [[Fire Shield]], opening the way to new areas.

Green Hill Zone (Sonic Mania)
First Zone, Sonic Mania
Number of Acts: 2
Level themes: tropical island, underground/cave
Sub-boss: Green Hill Zone Mini-Boss (Sonic Mania)
Boss: Death Egg Robot (Sonic Mania Boss)

Green Hill Zone is the first zone in Sonic Mania, which is based on Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles begin their adventure here after the Phantom Ruby was excavated by the Hard-Boiled Heavies.

Like its original version, Green Hill Zone is a tropical paradise of palm trees with mountains and a beautiful lake with bright blue waters in the background. In its new foreground, it carries beyond the original vibrant flowers with a series of bridges in the style of Emerald Hill Zone. Highlight for the last section of the stage, which takes place in a cave similar to that presented in Sonic the Hedgehog 8-bit and Sonic Generations featuring a beautiful subterranean lake in the background and small rock formations.

In addition, the spiky bridges can now be burned with a Fire Shield, opening the way to new areas.

After defeating the boss, the player jumps into a hole and is teleported by the Phantom Ruby to Chemical Plant Zone.
