The Goal Ring is an item in the 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Debut Appearance

In Sonic Adventure, there was no Goal Ring. Instead, Sonic had to either get to a specific area, rescue Miles Prower or destroy a capsule. Amy Rose had to escape using a balloon, E-102 Gamma had to destroy a target and Big the Cat had to go fishing. Sonic Team was unsatisfied and wanted Sonic to be more like speed, so in the sequel Sonic Adventure 2, your character had get to the Goal Ring as fast as they could while blasting through hazards. An exception was Knuckles the Echidna and Rouge the Bat, like the original, they searched for various objects. The Goal Ring has appeared in every Sonic game since then.

Appearance

In Sonic Adventure 2, the Goal Ring resembled a giant ring with a flashing symbol reading "GOAL". There were also Back Rings that read "BACK". They kept this appearance in Sonic Heroes, but instead of reading "GOAL" there was merely a picture of an arrow, showing the heroes to move on. In Shadow the Hedgehog, they actually are massive rings, but if it's any Action Stage that's not Lethal Highway, Cryptic Castle, Central City, The Doom, Sky Troops, Mad Matrix, Death Ruins, Iron Jungle or Lost Impact, then the Goal Ring would be a Chaos Emerald. In Sonic Advance games, Goal Rings are floating rings with stars.

Other Goal Rings

There are also Back Rings in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure 2 so you could restart the entire Action Stage if you didn't collect a certain object. They appeared in the same place a Goal Ring would. In Shadow the Hedgehog, they are replaced with Save Point Teleporters.
