Sixteenth course, Sonic Drift 2
Level theme: tropical island
Balloon Panic | Milky Way

Emerald Ocean is a racecourse in Sonic Drift 2 for the Sega Game Gear. This stage is the fourth track of the Blue Chaos GP (Blue being the hardest of the three available tournaments), coming after Balloon Panic and before Milky Way. As with most other races in the Chaos Grand Prix, you have to complete three laps of the track to proceed, and the fastest racer gets a Chaos Emerald.

It seems that Dr. Robotnik really took the all-terrain ethos to heart when planning the Chaos Grand Prix, because this track takes place out at sea! And not "out at sea" as in "racing over tenuous decks suspended above the waves"; no, you actually drive on brine. And that can't be good for the cars' suspension.

Emerald Ocean sees you circle a tropical island, speeding over the warm, azure surf of coral seas. Given that the stage comes straight after Balloon Panic, and (through a circuitous chain of reasoning; see the relevant article) Balloon Panic is potentially on / near South Island, our best guess for Emerald Ocean's location is, vicariously, near South Island as well.

This racecourse's gimmik comes in the fact that, as previously mentioned, it's liquid. Consequently, you don't have to worry about falling off the level if you run off the track, but your car will sink if you slow down too much. Should this occur, you will find yourself ignomoniously plucked out of the briney deep by a metal claw, and given a push to set you on your way again.
