Labyrinth Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog is an example of the underwater theme

The underwater theme represents levels that primarily take place underwater. This theme first appeared in Labyrinth Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit) and later in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)’s Chemical Plant Zone.

Underwater gameplay has additional difficulty due to necessitated air bubble use and reduced speed. Because of this slower gameplay, the underwater theme is used carefully among the Sonic series. Levels with this theme also use above-water areas to contrast with the slower underwater gameplay. This theme incorporates use of fish-like badniks like the Chop Chop, Mega Chopper, or Zaririn. Additionally, the Amenbo and E-03 Sweep are spider-like badniks able to walk on the water surface.
