Underwater gameplay has additional difficulty due to necessitated air bubble use and reduced speed.  Because of this slower gameplay, the underwater theme is used carefully among the Sonic series.  Levles with this theme also use above-water areas to contrast with the slower underwater gameplay.  This theme incorporates use of fish-like badniks like the [[Chop Chop]], [[Mega Chopper]], or [[Zaririn]].  Additionally, the [[Amenbo]] and [[E-03 Sweep]] are spider-like badniks able to walk on the water surface.

The underwater theme represents levels that primarily take place underwater. This theme first appeared in Labyrinth Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog and later in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Casino Night Zone.
