Wing Fortress Zone. This enormous battleship is an early example of the Flying Fortress cliché.

That Ivo Robotnik really does like his aircraft! The Flying Fortress cliché comes back time and again in the Sonic games, with the blue blur fighting his way through the stratosphere on the back of some giant mechanical leviathan. Most Flying Fortress zones take place on some type of aerial battleship made by Eggman for the singular use of destroying Sonic, although in Shadow the Hedgehog (game) the black 'hog finds himself upon a GUN battleship rather than one of the Doctor's creations.

Variations on the theme include levels set across a fleet of airships rather than a single flying fortress, including Secret Rings' Levitated Ruin, where the craft are biological, not mechanical.

For even more altitude in your zone, see Death Egg cliché. For even more than that, see Outer Space cliché.

First appeared: Sky Base Zone, Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit).
