Hot sand, hot sun, quicksand, spikes... a virtual hell. You just gotta think to yourself that those rings are hot too! Levels of the western variety may sport rocky gorges and cacti, with railroad features, saloons and tumbleweed are optional.
Desert- and western-themed levels often overlap with the Ancient Ruins cliché.
First appeared: Desert Palace Zone, one of the multiplayer stages in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
