Buzzer[1], called Stinger (スティンガー) in the Japanese manual[2], is a Badnik in the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 found in Emerald Hill Zone. It serves exactly the same function as the Buzz Bomber enemy from Sonic the Hedgehog, but now with a slightly different look. A Buzzer flies above Sonic and makes a slight pause before firing a small bullet diagonally down at him before flying off. Try to attack while Buzzer pauses to take them out.
There are differences between the sprite for Buzzer in the Simon Wai prototype and the final Sonic 2. Some of the more noticeable differences include the eyes, rocket pack, and shading on stripes. These were improvements done by Judy Totoya, art director for the project. Extra animation frames for Buzzer, which show a bulge produced when fireballs are shot and larger fireballs being shot, were found in a digitizer disk given by Tom Payne to ICEknight, which contained art of several prototype enemies.
At one point a version was capable of firing a shot that would burn the bridges of Emerald Hill Zone. The graphics for these burning bridges can be found in prototypes.

Other appearances
An enemy that appears to be equivalent to Buzzer, Unnamed GHZ Badnik 1, can also be found in Green Hill Zone from Sonic Blast. They act they way they did in Sonic 2.
The enemy also appeared in Sonic Pocket Adventure's Neo South Island Zone, and they are not very different from those seen in Sonic 2, up to the same standard attack.
In Sonic Rivals, Buzzers are seen in the form of collectible cards.
Buzzers reappear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I's Splash Hill Zone. In this appearance they shoot projectiles as in previous games, but now they have bigger stingers and are slower compared to previous appearances.
Buzzers also appear in both versions of Sonic Colors, and this time, they have a general redesign, now with four wings on its back. They retain their attack pattern, but now hover faster than their previous appearances and their energy projectiles are slower. They appear in the various 2D sections of Sweet Mountain, Starlight Carnival and various Game Land stages.
Buzzers are also found in both versions of Sonic Generations, where they are found in Planet Wisp in the console/PC versions, and strangely replace the Buzz Bombers in the Nintendo 3DS version's Green Hill.
