Bridge Zone is the second zone on Sonic the Hedgehog for Game Gear and Sega Master System. Bridge Zone is unique to the SMS/GG game. It also differs from the level structure of traditional Sonic games and has a segment where the screen will scroll automatically.

Synopsis

Bridge Zone is the second level of the Game Gear / Master System Sonic 1. As with all other stages in the game, Bridge Zone consists of two platforming Acts followed by a shorter, third Act which contains the Zone's boss (and nary a single ring!). The unusual feature is that Act 2 contains automatic scroll, like Sky Chase Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit), which controls the rate at which you move through the level (and makes it impossible to finish in less than 1:53). Geographically speaking, it is located on the central river of South Island.

The zone, as expected, is filled with wooden bridges (some less sturdy than others), as Sonic crosses South Island's massive central river. There are also giant metal scales dotted around the level; presumably these are placed by Eggman as scientific equipment of some sort. Robotic fish leap out of the water to try and bite Sonic; Also, we see Spikes, a Badnik normally found in Spring Yard Zone from the 16-bit version.

Instruction Manual Description

Quickly cross the bridges before they crumble, or else you'll end up in the bottom the the lake! Jump from seesaws to reach high cliffs. Good timing is the key to success.

Walkthroughs

Act 1

Sonic the Hedgehog - Bridge Zone Act 1.png

This is the introductory level to the zone. Simply navigate to the end of the level. Some bridges collapse as you walk on them so be careful. You will also encounter balance scales. Jump on them to make the weight jump up, and when it falls down, you will be propelled up. The more you let it hop, the higher Sonic can ascend.

Chaos Emerald - Before you walk over a bridge (one whose planks fall down), you may notice the Chaos Emerald sitting on a ledge. Stand on the left most falling plank, and as it falls, jump on to the ledge and get the Emerald. Jump to the left to get off the ledge, and on to land.

Act 2

This level scrolls, so if Sonic isn't fast enough, he will start to get pushed by an invisible wall on the left of the screen. And if you aren't careful, Sonic might fall off a bridge.

Act 3

Note: this description is for the Master System version of the game. The battle against Dr. Robotnik. Go to the battle area by running to the right of the level. You will find an area with two banks of a stream, and a tiny island in the middle. Robotnik appears from the flowing water on either side of the island. Jump on his tiny pod as many times as you can before you shoots a few bullets to the left or right, and ducks underwater again.

In the Game Gear version of this level, the island has been replaced by an ongoing two-part bridge which can not be fallen off of, leaving Dr. Robotnik and his projectiles as the only things to worry about during this battle.
