Forbidden names
When naming the protagonist at the beginning of the game, if the player enters a bad word as a name, the protagonist will refuse it. Most of these bad words the game checks for include sexual terms and slang words, and blatant racist/ableist/transphobic slurs. The game also checks for substrings, so "butt" and "butts" will both match.
In addition, the game will also forbid the player from using names of characters who are part of the narrative, displaying different flavour text from the protagonist for doing so. Unlike bad words, the game will not check for substrings with these names, so names like "Sonic Fan" are still acceptable. There are 15 known character names that cannot be used:
- AMY
- BLAZE
- CONDUCTOR
- CUBOT
- EGGMAN
- ESPIO
- FLICKY
- KNUCKLES
- METAL SONIC
- ORBOT
- ROUGE
- SHADOW
- SONIC
- TAILS
- VECTOR
Debug features
The game has a debug flag that, when enabled, will unlock the following debug features[1]:
Debug map
A "DEBUG MAP" button will be added to the title screen and gameplay, which presents the user with a level select to change scenes on-the-fly.
Instant win/loss buttons
Buttons labelled "I WON!!!" and "I LOST :(" will be added to the "THINK" mini-games, which will instantly trigger a win or loss respectively when clicked on. The loss button does not appear during the mini-game levels that are played during the finale.
Default protagonist name
The protagonist's default name is Barry. This can be seen by skipping the name entry screen using the debug features above, or by viewing the script files. This name was also used during the launch trailer[1].
Internal project name
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog uses the name "ChooChooBooBoo" internally according to Unity-related strings in a text file named lib_burst_generated.txt, found in the The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog_BurstDebugInformation_DoNotShip/Data/Plugins/x86_64 directory in the game's files:
