The player starts right on the top of the first steep slope at the beginning rather than in freefall in the final.

The first steep slope has had its ramp moved upwards later in the final.

This section after the first slope was redesigned, removing the spring and adding two Monitors, one of which is added into a newly-added bonus room.

This downward slope had a bump added to the end of it in the final, but the level designer forgot to remove the Rings from inside the bump. Oops.

There is one red spring here instead of two yellow ones, and a ceiling pillar is shorter. The swinging spike ball also hasn't been placed here yet.

Though this route is tailored more for Tails, platforms leading up to the area were added in the final. Rings were also added to the descending staircase.

Rings and spikes would be added here.

Tails can join Sonic on the spinning tops, making them more difficult to control.

This section had many more spikes added. This prevents the player from simply running up the slope using the spring, relying on floating platforms to climb up.

The spring here was downgraded to a yellow one, and the ceiling spikes were swapped out for a breakable wall. An additional set of spikes was added to the gentle slope to compensate.

This section is missing a floor, and with the camera being positioned as it is, the user can see the non-existent background.

Signs in Marble Garden Zone exist to show players where to go. Some are missing in this prototype, while this one is pointing upwards. We're at the top of the stage - there's nowhere further up.

Sonic will die if he falls off the bottom of the screen, and Tails doesn't automatically pick him up, making it very difficult to fight the Drill Mobile.

It is, however, possible if using a combination of the second control pad and moving off-screen to the left.

Most of the Knuckles route is in place. Here, the ground shakes, but Eggman (or Eggrobo) do not appear.

The player can get to the Knuckles boss area, but the boss will not spawn.
