Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (alpha)/Comparisons/Dust Hill Zone

From Sonic Retro

Back to: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (alpha)/Comparisons.

Mystic Cave Zone (called Dust Hill Zone in this prototype) has become a more playable state than in the Simon Wai prototype and is the fourth Zone in normal play. However, there are still plenty of differences.

Four moving spike balls rotating around a platform. The Simon Wai prototype had these, but the player will never see more than pairs of two in the final game.

Act 2

Three swinging "Newton's cradle" platforms in a row. The player doesn't see this in the final game, probably because the middle one doesn't move. The sound effect is also different.

There doesn't seem to be much reason to ever take the upper routes of Dust Hill/Mystic Cave Zone, given that they're harder than the more easily accessible lower routes both in this prototype and the final game. Swinging platforms attack Sonic and Tails as they make their way up the steps in this prototype. They're gone in the final game.

It appears that the entire top-most route from the Simon Wai prototype was in the process of being dummied out, as the latter parts of it have been replaced with the ceiling, though parts of it can still be reached with debug mode. There are even some Rings to be found up here, which would end up being forgotten about and remain hidden in the ceiling even in the final game.

The screen locks earlier for the boss, meaning part of the track Sonic and Tails run on is off-camera.

A janky version of Drill Eggman II appears as a boss. Its movement is more erratic than the final game, and it doesn't cause spikes to fall down.
