Stories

STICKS & STONES

The story begins with Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy sharing a meal that is disrupted by Dr. Eggman piloting his "big boy" mech from the prior issues. Eggman complains to the heroes that they were supposed to meet on the beach an hour earlier for a climatic battle. Sonic admits to Eggman that they forgot it was their running theme for this story arc, and apologizes. After some exchanged quips the mech launches missiles toward them, beginning their battle. Sticks makes a sudden appearance, eating the heroes' food that had fallen to the ground before holding up a bag containing the "legendary weapon" she found at the end of Sonic Boom 03.

Sticks realizing that the Rock of Justice has lost its power.

Telling a tale of how the weapon was forged "in the era before time", she removes it from the bag and reveals the "Rock of Justice". The other characters dismissively write it off as just a rock, leaving Sticks to sulk. Eggman ponders giving up the assault, feeling forgotten and insulted, but Orbot and Cubot point out to him that he's already gotten a lot farther than he did in the last issue. The fight resumes, with Sticks pleading for anyone to use the Rock of Justice, to no avail. Tails calls out the need for synergy, throwing a curled up Sonic toward Eggman's mech. However, he gets caught in a slingshot the mech was holding and gets launched away. Knuckles spins and launches Amy toward the mech next, but a tennis racquet emerges from its wrist and swats her back. Frustrated, Sticks throws the Rock of Justice, which punctures multiple holes throughout Eggman's mech as it ricochets around. Just as Eggman begins to proclaim it will take more than that to stop him, the "big boy" crumbles to pieces. Eggman dejectedly states that he had "anti-hammer armor" installed on the inside, but Cubot points out that he didn't have "anti-rock armor" installed. Sticks proudly holds up the Rock of Justice as Eggman flees the scene.

The gang apologizes to Sticks for not believing in her, however, she sadly realizes that the rock "used up all its power" in the fight with Eggman. Everyone tearfully respects the rock's departure from life. Sticks returns home and chucks the rock into "the pile with the rest of 'em", revealing a corner filled with various rocks. Meanwhile at Eggman's base, he angrily laments wasting four whole issues on the "big boy" mech. He quickly moves past the defeat and eagerly shows Orbot and Cubot his next invention, cloaked behind a tease for the next issue of the comic.

Amy addresses the reader, beginning to suggest they send their letters in to let them know what they think of the comic so far. However, Sticks bursts through a door saying they can't just give the address away as that's how "they" get you. Surprised, Amy asks who "they" is. The two have a back and forth about how they could be spied on, and how fan art could be used to create an effigy of Sticks and steal her soul. Amy acknowledges the reader again, asking for letters, e-mails, Tweets, and fan-art to be sent to Archie Comics. Sticks relents, suggesting that maybe someone could send info on the "creeper" who shows up at her house except on Sundays and bank holidays. Amy asks if she means the mail carrier, and Sticks alleges that "they're up to something".
