Sega Retro is a free content online encyclopedia written collaboratively by contributors from around the world. Its goal is to form a complete knowledge base for all things connected to Sega, from its early beginnings to its most recent multimedia endeavors. Utilizing the MediaWiki platform, the site is open for anyone to register an account, allowing users to participate in creating and editing articles, and uploading various files connected to the history of Sega.

It is a sister-site to Sonic Retro, part of the larger family of Retro wikis.

On March 31, 2010, as part of an April Fools prank, it was announced that Sonic Retro would be closing its doors, instead being replaced by a similar website called Sega Retro.[1] However, no Sonic content would be permitted on the site. It soon became clear that while Sonic Retro would remain, Sega Retro was indeed a full-fledged wiki that would cover all aspects of Sega.[2] Any content focused on Sega that was already on Sonic Retro was ported over, with redirects leading to the new pages. Similarly, pages were set up on Sega Retro for Sonic-related content that redirected to Sonic Retro.

By February 2012 Sega Retro officially overtook Sonic Retro in terms of size, containing over 4500 articles[3] while Sonic Retro was just shy of 4300.[4]

On April 1, 2013 it was announced that SEGAbits would partner with Sonic Retro and would integrate Sega Retro into the existing SEGAbits site.[5]
