Scrap Brain Zone is a scrapped Zone from Sonic Mania.

Overview

Presumably based on the Zone of the same name from Sonic the Hedgehog, very little is known about this Zone. It has never been acknowledged by anyone associated with the development of Sonic Mania, nor is it known if any assets were ever produced for it. The only reference to its existence is within the game's code, where a check for its folder appears within the code of a platform object. It is unknown when the Zone was scrapped and for what reasons, but the lack of materials associated with it suggests that it was cut very early in development.

While a sprite sheet of objects from the version of Scrap Brain seen in the 2013 remake of Sonic 1 did initially exist within the game's files, it was seemingly unrelated and eventually removed from the files in subsequent updates.

It is plausible that the Zone was either merged with or replaced by Metallic Madness Zone, as the original namesakes of both Zones have similar visuals, gameplay mechanics and narrative roles in their respective games. Additionally, the Egg Pistons Mk. II mini-boss of Metallic Madness is based on the Egg Crusher boss from Final Zone, which is located on the same level map as Act 2 of Scrap Brain in Sonic 1. The Caterkiller Badnik is also associated with both Zones, as it appeared as an enemy in the first two acts of Scrap Brain in Sonic 1, while the sprites for an unused but functional version of the enemy are located among the sprites of Metallic Madness within the files of Sonic Mania.
