Rotor Walrus

From Sonic Retro

(Redirected from Rotor)
SonictheHedgehog2-Push.png It has been proposed that Rotor Walrus be renamed and moved to a new page.
Reason for proposal: This character is known as "Rotor the Walrus" in later issues of the Archie comic and simply as "Rotor" in SatAM. Moving this page to a more generically titled one (such as simply Rotor) would accommodate for all versions of the character.

Rotor Walrus is a fictional anthropomorphic walrus created by DiC for the 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog animated TV series. An original member of the Freedom Fighters, he serves as the team's resident mechanic and inventor, creating many of Knothole Village's surveillance and security systems.

Character conception

Rotor was conceived as a friend of Sonic the Hedgehog at some point in 1992, likely being based on the captured animal Rocky (later localised as Joe Sushi) from the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game. While created for the television show, his first public appearance was in the US comic book series published by Archie Comics almost a year prior, debuting in issue #¼.

As the cartoon had yet to be finalised, Rotor spent the first year being referred to as Boomer in the comics, until a request came through from Sega to make it more consistent with the TV show. His colour scheme also differs between the two, being purple with a green belt in the comics, and blue with a red belt in the TV show. Rotor usually wears a backwards yellow cap, though in later issues of the comic began wearing yellow goggles, and in late 2003, a brown jacket and glasses.

Outside of a cameo in the US-produced Sonic Spinball, Rotor has never appeared in a Sonic video game, and after the TV show ended in December 1994, the character was rarely seen outside of Archie publications.

According to Ken Penders, Rotor was set to be written in as a homosexual, notably in the "Mobius: 25 Years Later" saga. Ken had planted clues in the story to elude to this, but as Rotor was deemed to be underdeveloped, the idea was scrapped[1].
