Character conception
The earliest known mention of King Acorn is in the second revision of the SatAM series Bible from March 11th, 1992, which was written by Len Janson, Bruce Shelly and Reed Shelly. There he's described as the King of Mobius who created the Power Rings with the help of his environmental advisor Nate Morgan. Monologues written from the perspectives of Princess Sally Acorn and Sonic the Hedgehog describe him to have been popular with the public and fond of Sally. He is said to have disappeared on the day of Dr. Robotnik's coup d'etat, with Sally insisting that Robotnik is to blame.[2]

Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)
Pre-Super Genesis Wave
In Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog publications set before the Super Genesis Wave, King Acorn's full name was Maximillian Acorn, and he was first mentioned in Sonic the Hedgehog issue #0, while a flashback sequence in Sonic the Hedgehog issue #17 featured his first physical appearance. He was most often depicted as a brown Mobian squirrel with gray hair, moustache and eyebrows, blue eyes and an outfit consisting of red boots and a blue military jacket with golden epaulets. According Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Sonic Comic Encyclopedia, his moniker was King Maximillian the Cursed.[3]
Born to King Frederick Acorn, Maximillian was raised in ordinance with Acorn traditions, bonding with the Source of All at age ten,[4] being engaged at eleven and married at eighteen.[5] He reigned as King of the Kingdom of Acorn during the Great War, whose circumstances led him to evacuate his wife Alicia and their son Elias to the Royal Compound on the Floating Island and declare Overlander turncoat Julian Kintobor as the Kingdom's new Warlord.[6][7] The war ended in the Kingdom of Acorn's victory after Maximillian subjugated Overlord Charlemagne in an arranged sword duel.[8]
Shortly after the war's end, Kintobor would assume command over the kingdom under his new alias of Doctor Ivo Robotnik, banishing Maximillian to the Zone of Silence.[9] There he was forced to pledge loyalty to Ixis Naugus, as use of his Crystalline Magic was necessary for survival in the Zone.[10] By the time the Knothole Freedom Fighters rescued him from the Zone, he was suffering from amnesia and leading an army of aggressive beings.[11] Back on Mobius, his body began turning into crystal due to his past exposure to Naugus' magic,[10] albeit this was eventually reversed with the powers of the Sword of Acorns and the Crown of Acorns.[12]
After the First Robotnik War, Maximillian resumed his duty as the King. Following him surviving a poisoning and paraplegia,[13][14] he voluntarily stepped down from the throne, with Elias taking his place.[14] Maximillian remained sickly and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of the Pre-Super Genesis Wave timeline.
Maximillian Acorn was often portrayed as a cold and unmoved character, putting the security of his Kingdom over the needs of those around him, while still deeply caring for his family. Maximillian often had a hostile disposition towards Sonic, usually due to his daughter Sally being in love with him in spite of his status as a commoner. This aspect of the character came from writer Ken Penders,[15] who had initially intended to explore it further in stories set after Sonic the Hedgehog issue #50.[16]
