The flying fortress theme represents gameplay that takes place on Eggman's fleet of airships. This theme first appeared in Sky Base Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit).
Most flying fortress levels take place on some type of aerial battleship made by Dr. Eggman for the singular use of destroying Sonic. Sometimes these levels may be set on airships belonging to other organisations instead of one by Eggman, such as an airship fleet by G.U.N. in Shadow the Hedgehog or the Battle Kukku Army's Battle Fortress in Tails Adventures.
Variations on the theme include levels set across a fleet of airships rather than a single flying fortress, as in Secret Rings’ Levitated Ruin, where the craft are biological, not mechanical.
