From Sonic Retro

Move to GerbilSoft

Can someone please fix the capitalization in the title? It's GerbilSoft, not Gerbilsoft... --Dani 01:58, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Done. - Hivebrain 02:17, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Gens/GS

If you need someone to do beta testing on the Windows build, btw, I'm more than happy to throw a few ROMs at it. Overlord 12:56, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

SSBB Character select screen

Could you do me a favor is replace the widescreen character selection screen you've took with this full-screen version of the character selection screen please?--Brandondorf9999 04:35, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

I've been considering replacing the widescreen Wii images I took a while ago with 4:3 versions, but that image you linked is *terrible*. 2560x1920 is upscaled (the textures are blurry), and there's a ton of empty space on the top and bottom in addition to the sides.
Either way, the best option is to retake a screenshot at 1x (640x480) in Dolphin (which I can't run anymore due to lack of a GL3-capable GPU). I will probably do this when I get a chance. ---GerbilSoft 04:38, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
I have a screenshot that you can use which isn't that bad. There's a screenshot that exists on neoseeker on the previous revisions of the screen which is located here. Why not try uploading that here so you don't have to take one?
I would like to see this magical Wii that can output a 1024x768 image. ---GerbilSoft 04:48, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
You have to configure that through dolphin emulator. It's better to actually upload it here. Also, 4:3 is supposed to have more top and bottom because it's a standard aspect ratio of which is cropped or uncropped from 16:9. Those empty spaces are part of the menu as they are made in model's so that the player doesn't see anything else on the bottom or top. If 640x480 is the native res you would like, you can try this instead.--Brandondorf9999 05:01, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
First off, that "new" screenshot is just one of the previous ones downscaled. There's no point in using it.
Second, if you actually owned a copy of Smash Bros. Brawl instead of using a pirated copy in Dolphin, you'd know that when the console is set to 4:3, there *isn't* extra space on the top and bottom. Instead, it simply doesn't have extra space on the sides. ---GerbilSoft 05:05, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Well, the game was supposed to also use a vert- screen change rather than a hor+ for widescreen and full-screen switching. You may want to use this tutorial on the wikihow website. It's better to use widescreen hack on Dolphin emulator rather than changing it in the general settings to 4:3. Try keeping the ratio on the general settings on 16x9, changing the aspect in the graphics menu to "Force 4:3" and put a check on "widescreen hack" on that box when emulating a 16x9 game in open matte rather than normal.--Brandondorf9999 05:21, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
It doesn't matter what sort of "fancy hacks" you can do with Dolphin. We use screenshots that match the original as close as possible, which means how it looks on the original console. ---GerbilSoft 05:24, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
And as for the piracy part, I believe those may or may not have malware in them. People use game copying apps to extract the iso from the disc and share it through torrents and such. My computer doesn't supprt wii discs so I have to download the iso that was copied by other people and emulate it and let's just make them use Vert- fov instead of the original game iso because we'd like to see more rather than just less on 4:3. Also, dolphin can emulate games through the disc when inserted into a device which they call it "Boot from DVD".--Brandondorf9999 05:33, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
First off: No, it is impossible to get infected by "malware" from a Wii disc image. (Unless you're using a really shitty computer, or Windows 8.) Two, you cannot boot a Wii disc in Dolphin, even if you have one of the LG drives that can read them, because those drives don't actually support the Wii disc format. The ripping programs exploit an error handler in the drive's firmware, which makes it possible to read the disc, but it's really slow. And three, we are NOT going to make them use "Vert-" crap because it is simply WRONG. I'm not discussing this any further. ---GerbilSoft 05:37, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Something rare found in Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed

And I forgot to tell you that a weapon which was one of the foes of Donkey Kong Country is Puftup. I found him as an item used to keep racers from getting into the first place of the race. Puftup seems to be a blue pufferfish which that color came from his debut on Donkey Kong Country 2. He's also one of the characters that come from non-sonic games which have made it's first appearance in the Sonic franchise which is owned by SEGA.

I'm not able to create that article just yet, would you upload those images of puftup that is used on the Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed as one of it's weapons? You may find them here or you might as well get the game and try taking screenshots of the item on whatever track you wish to use it on.--Brandondorf9999 05:56, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Good scans

You've been marking some scans as "good", but they only show the front of the box, and as such are still in need of replacement. Also, some were downloaded from the PressVault and aren't actually real scans. Personally I don't take any notice of whether a scan is tagged as good, but I thought I should let you know. - Hivebrain (talk) 01:27, 21 January 2015 (CST)

If you're referring to things like the ASRT boxes, I'd think they'd qualify as good box scans, since they're effectively the same thing, though it is only the front of the box so I'm not sure...
This was easier for cartridges and discs, since there was only a front scan. :V ---GerbilSoft (talk) 09:54, 21 January 2015 (CST)
Good cover scans for these consoles should have both sides (and the spine), otherwise they're incomplete. The whole idea of marking things as "good" is to say "this doesn't need replacing" - if they're incomplete, they do need replacing.
Also a lot of these cardboard box releases were photoshopped together to create more traditional plastic covers too - I've never liked that - sides should really be scanned separately for super duper maximum accuracy. We're here to preserve what's there in real life, someone else (offsite) can adapt this stuff into custom covers or whatever.
That being said, some of these totally should be marked as good. Sonic Retro tends to inherit ideas from Sega Retro but it's always slow at implementing them -Black Squirrel (talk) 10:30, 21 January 2015 (CST)

a thought

This is about the area I pay least attention to

A lot of these old "hacking guide" pages aren't Sonic-specific - that VDP page being one of them. I'm thinking general Sega development stuff would be better served on Sega Retro - that's where any official material will go if it's found. -Black Squirrel (talk) 16:01, 16 March 2015 (CDT)

Grammatical errors

Excuse me for grammatical errors, for I am Brazilian and use only the translator, I will try to take as many errors as I can. OtavioGamer999

Using an automatic translator can definitely result in errors, so we don't recommend doing that. Also, you should have replied on your own talk page in order to not fragment the conversation.
See the other info about screenshots, too. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 15:27, 23 April 2015 (CDT)

Missing SA2 scans

You have a choice

http://abandonware-magazines.org/affiche_mag.php?mag=183&num=3681&album=oui

My policy on magazine scans is to upload the magazine in full as a PDF. But this magazine (and a couple of others) needs cropping and cleaning up first, because it the quality sucks. I haven't had the patience to do it myself.

If you want to fix those files you can either upload each relevant page separately (which is not a good idea - they'll be deleted at some point in favour of a PDF), make the PDF yourself (which is not a good idea because server woes) or just delete the empty files. -Black Squirrel (talk) 15:50, 23 February 2016 (CST)

You guys are wasting your time uploading entire magazines for one article. Once admins start worrying about bandwidth it'll be one of the first things they remove. Did they keep music uploads? NO.--MathUser2929 (talk) 19:57, 8 March 2016 (CST)
Bandwidth wasn't the reason music was removed.
With regards to fixing the files, I haven't done any JPEG to PDF conversion recently so I'm not sure what the best method is, and as mentioned, the server's PDF thumbnailing process causes all sorts of CPU thrashing, so that's better left to when we get that fixed. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 22:15, 8 March 2016 (CST)

File types

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Configuring_file_uploads

Question:

is there any reason we can't block .bin files from being uploaded (i.e. to force ROM hacks to be zipped)? I can't think of any reason why we'd want to upload a bin file, but I figured you'd be more in-tune with this than me.

I'd quite like to block .bmp files too... though this seems so obvious I'm left wondering if there's a reason nobody has fiddled with this stuff in 10+ years.

-Black Squirrel (talk) 14:43, 9 July 2017 (CDT)

File type checking was disabled for some reason. I re-enabled it. BIN and GEN weren't listed in LocalSettings.php, but were listed in Mediawiki:Uploadtext; I changed the template. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 15:20, 9 July 2017 (CDT)

Item and Location Templates

Can I go ahead and make templates for items and locations in a similar format to Template:Characters? --BSonirachi (talk) 16:14, 6 September 2017 (CDT)

I don't see why not. If it improves the organization of pages, go for it. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 16:16, 6 September 2017 (CDT)

Sonic Ghost Shooting

Sorry I had no idea that game did get released. I always come to Sonic Retro from my sources and not a wiki. And hows come this Arcade game isn't in the Arcade category? Also sorry for doing a bad job at adding a game to a category. I infrequently edit pages so I'm not used to the editor. --Bmhedgehog 01:12, 5 October 2017 (EDT)

Sonic & Knuckles Collection with arranged music

OK, I made an ISO from disc I have. But there is a lil' problem with loops in some systems, e.g. Windows 10. Maybe I have a corrupted disc (I bought it in 2004!). Soniccis96 (talk) 02:58, 15 June 2018 (CDT)

So uh, I'm not exactly sure what you did here, but that ISO image isn't an ISO image; it's a RAR archive. Can you rerip the disc using ImgBurn's "Read" function? ---GerbilSoft (talk) 10:22, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
Mm? Got a "disc read bad - 100" error, so I made an archive instead. CD-ROM is corrupted. Soniccis96 (talk) 10:33, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
Ah! I finally did it... But the CD automatically set an region when installing, so SETUP.EXE will select language automatically. Also, this version have "SONIC & KNUCKLES COLLECTION (Remove only)" instead "S&K Killer!". Is it a repack I got? Soniccis96 (talk) 10:48, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
The disc is named "SONIC3K_EN_US". This is the US version, not the Japanese release. In addition, the disc's primary volume descriptor indicates that the disc image was created on 2018/06/15 18:35:51, GMT+0100. (This is when the disc was mastered, not when the ISO was ripped.) ---GerbilSoft (talk) 11:20, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
I'll explain: ImgBurn can't rip corrupted data, I did it myself by copying from CD and making an ISO. "SONIC3K_EN_US" means that that was an another pack. Hmm... Well, I missed again... I bought the CD in Gorbushka' yard in Moscow. So it maybe an repack. I can't make an ISO directly from an corrupted CD-ROM! Soniccis96 (talk) 11:41, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
If it was really "corrupted", you wouldn't be able to copy the files off of it, either. Anyways, my copy of the JP version will be here in a few weeks, at which point I'll be able to verify it for real. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 11:48, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
I'll wipe the following text in the article for a while. Anyone can just make one error. And fix it oneself. If you will check your CD, restore my edits or fix 'em. No, I am not a spammer, I am just a rookie user, who caught the illegally-made CD. Nothing been here. Soniccis96 (talk) 12:07, 15 June 2018 (CDT)
