== Comic pages and pending move requests ==
 +
 +
It's exhausting work, but so far I have written up the entirety of ''[[Sonic the Comic]]''s adaptation of ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' and nailed down all of the reprint-only issues that followed it. It would also be a good idea that you check the covers you upload for details such as release dates, prices, credits and any free gifts that came with the issues, and links to previous and next issues.
 +
 +
Also, the [[:Category:Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW) comics|IDW comics]] need to be added to the Printed Media tab on the wiki's header so they're easier for visitors to access. Dunno why it was never done in the first place when the comics came out.

And one last thing, several pages have pending move requests, some which have been pending for a while:
 +
* [[Egg Fighter Shooter]] - Correct name is "Egg Shooter" according to ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s in-game encyclopedia.
 +
* [[Egg Shackles]] - Correct name is "Egg Shackle" according to ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s in-game encyclopedia.
 +
* [[Grand Battle Kukku 15th]] - Correct name is "Great Battle Kukku 15th".
 +
* [[Grimer]] - Should use his full name, Grimer Wormtongue.
 +
* [[Poloy's Forest]] - It's not called "Poloy's Forest" anywhere. The game itself has always referred to it as "Poloy Forest"
 +
* [[Special Stage (Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island; Saturn/PC)]] - Don't know about this one. It was decided that the Mega Drive version's Special Stage should keep its name, but what about this one?
 +
* [[Thunderball]] - Correct name is "Thunder Ball" according to ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s in-game encyclopedia.
 +
* [[Unknown TM Enemy]] - Its name is "Wasp" according to the [[:File:SonicSpinball GG US manual.pdf|Game Gear manuals]] for ''[[Sonic Spinball (8-bit)|Sonic Spinball]].
 +
* [[:File:Sonic2 gg kr cart.jpg]] - If this is a Master System cart, then the filename should have "SMS" in it.

== Text replacement assistance needed ==
 +

So I have decided to give the affiliation field for [[:Template:EnemyBob]] the same kind of automation treatment that the games field has, but I do have one problem on my hand: I have to edit a LOT of pages I already assigned affiliations to in order to accommodate for the changes, which is going to be ''very'' tedious to do manually. Since you have that text replacement tool handy, could you use that to change everything for me please?
 +
 +
I also added <nowiki>{{{affiliation2}}}</nowiki> for the case of enemies with more than one affiliation (such as Badniks that fell under the Deadly Six's control in ''Sonic Lost World''), so you'll probably need to accommodate for those as well. --[[User:BSonirachi|BSonirachi]] ([[User talk:BSonirachi|talk]]) 12:54, 25 July 2019 (EDT)

== "In other media" - common enemies, Zones ==
 +
 +
In the past we'd talked about giving recurring enemies (Buzz Bomber, Moto Bug etc.) a page per game, much like we have for Metal Sonic boss fights and the [[Green Hill Zone (disambiguation)|multiple]] Green Hill Zones. How should "in other media" sections be handled for Green Hill Zone and, in future, enemies?
 +
 +
Might it be worthwhile to rename and reformat the Green Hill Zone disambiguation page into something of a "hub"? I'm thinking along the lines of:
 +
 +
1. A one/two sentence blurb/overview<br>
 +
2. The current "Levels" section (rename to "Game appearances" for consistency?) linking to each individual page<br>
 +
2b. Similar/Related Levels? (Emerald Hill Zone, etc.)<br>
 +
3. In other media
 +
 +
Also, in terms of each enemy having its own page per game, I'm guessing this would also apply to the 16-bit and 8-bit versions of Sonic Spinball? --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 11:57, 7 March 2020 (EST)
 +
:Sounds like a good plan - I would probably turn the current [[Green Hill Zone]] disambiguation page into this "hub" and stick it in [[:Category:Locations]]
 +
 +
:The Spinball enemies would be split up, yes. I would hope that one day there'll be a meaty "Technical information" section for each which should be quite different for each game -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 15:04, 7 March 2020 (EST)
 +
 +
::Great! I'll try to get started on it tomorrow. Once "Green Hill Zone (disambiguation)" has been updated into a hub style page, might it be worth renaming it to "Green Hill Zone", and renaming the Sonic 1 level to "Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit))"? The nested parentheses are a bit much, but we'd have to do that for the Sonic 1 8-bit/16-bit enemies anyway. I'm mainly keeping enemies in mind, since they're more recurring than Zones are, and would have more hub pages. --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 16:46, 7 March 2020 (EST)
 +
:::Yes that would be the plan - [[Green Hill Zone]], [[Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit))]], [[Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit))]] etc. -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 07:50, 8 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
::::That does bring a question to mind when it comes to titles with brackets. Are we still using only one set of brackets for titles like we've always done (e.g. "Special Stage (Sonic the Hedgehog 16-bit)"), or will we be transitioning to having multiple sets (like "Special Stage (Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit))? The latter seems a little messy to me, but I'm not sure. --[[User:BSonirachi|BSonirachi]] ([[User talk:BSonirachi|talk]]) 10:46, 8 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
:::::I'm easy either way, although there's also the question of Sega Retro's page, [[sega:Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive)]], which might be preferable to "16-bit" -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 13:47, 8 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
::::::I've updated [[Green Hill Zone (disambiguation)]]. It'd probably look tidier if the level list was a table, so I'll try to get around to that at some point. Should it be renamed to [[Green Hill Zone]] now? Sonic Forces is something of an issue with its stage naming convention. For example, the first level is called:<br>
 +
::::::'''Stage 1'''<br>
 +
::::::'''Green Hill'''<br>
 +
::::::'''Lost Valley'''<br>
 +
::::::Essentially, each stage is given a stage number, an area and a level name. Sometimes the latter two are the same (Stage 10, Green Hill, Green Hill). Currently the wiki isn't fully set up to accommodate this. [[Ghost Town]] has [[City]] in its location field, but I don't think the other locations have pages yet. A lot of these areas have familiar names - Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Metropolis, Death Egg. Perhaps [[Green Hill (Sonic Forces area)]], [[Metropolis (Sonic Forces area)]] and so on would be good equivalents for the [[City]] page? I'd have to look into whether Sonic Forces has an official terminology for these areas/regions/locations though.<br>
 +
 +
::::::Speaking of Death Egg, I think that should probably get the same treatment as Green Hill. Currently we have pages for [[Death Egg]] and [[Death Egg (disambiguation)]]. I don't think there's a need for both, and will incorporate the latter into the former, if that's okay? Chemical Plant, Seaside Hill, Rooftop Run and other frequently recurring stages would probably benefit from similar treatment.<br>
 +
::::::I'm keen to get started on the enemy pages, but I'm a little hesitant until we're all on the same page regarding brackets and 16-bit vs Mega Drive, 8-bit vs Game Gear/Master System, etc. I don't want to end up creating more work for anyone else later. --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 10:28, 15 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
:::::::I've avoided Sonic Forces so don't know much about that game - do whatever you think is best.
 +
:::::::And yes something similar should probably be done about Death Egg. There could be a few of these - [[Casino Night]] looks like another, [[Chemical Plant]] as well. -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 12:42, 15 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
::::::::I've updated the [[Death Egg]] page. This one was a little different, because it's both a level and an object that appears in other levels. The Sonic 1 [[Green Hill Zone]] page needs renaming to be game-specific, and the [[Green Hill Zone (disambiguation)]] page needs to become [[Green Hill Zone]] or [[Green Hill]]. [[Giant Mech]] also needs to be renamed, since its official name circa 1992 is "Death Egg". --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 11:33, 23 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
::::::::I made a page for [[Buzz Bomber (Sonic the Hedgehog 16-bit)]], as an example of how these game specific enemy pages could look going forward. Would we still want "affiliation" on these ("Eggman Empire" wasn't a thing in Sonic 1, but "Dr. Eggman" might suffice)? I couldn't figure out how to properly align the text to the images in the gallery. Anything else that should be changed? --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 12:34, 29 March 2020 (EDT)
 +
:::::::::Since the two types of Orbinaut in Sonic 1 are classified as different enemies in Japan (Uni Uni and Unidasu{{fileref|CE_S1_07.png}}) I'd like to give each of them their own page, but I'm unsure how to title them. Would [[Orbinaut (Uni Uni) (Sonic the Hedgeog 16-bit)]] be too wordy? Additionally, ウニダス is officially Romanised as '''Unidasu''' in Sonic Jam and '''Unidus''' in Sonic Adventure (JP manuals/guides) and Sonic Adventure 2 (JP/ENG guides). Would we favour the Unidus spelling for consistency with other games, or the Unidasu spelling since the Sonic Jam gallery directly relates to Sonic 1? --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 09:32, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
 +
::::::::::I'm no expert in Japanese, but I suspect it's meant to be "Unidus" everywhere.
 +
::::::::::On NEC Retro we've got a game called "Fan Fun", which in katakana is "ファンファン". Technically "Fan Fan", "Fan Fun", "Fun Fun" and "Fun Fan" are all valid translations - I suspect it's a similar issue with Unidus (Unidas).
 +
::::::::::I'd be tempted to go [[Unidus (Sonic the Hedgeog 16-bit)]] and [[Uni Uni (Sonic the Hedgeog 16-bit)]], but I admit that's inconsistent. Though IIRC we do have other games where some enemies were named in the Japanese verison but not in the English translations -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 10:34, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
 +
:::::::::::Sonic 1 is an odd duck, since some enemies are missing from the western manuals, but were officially named in merchandise etc, which persists to this day. Sonic Jam's gallery transliterates the JP names for those missing enemies - Basaran and Yadrin instead of Batbrain and Spikes (it's the same in the Japanese version, indicating that Sonic Team circa 1997 only had the manuals as reference for localised names and SOA didn't bother to correct them). Orbinaut is in that same boat, except SOA never distinguished between the two versions. Since we're using the names Batbrain and Spikes, I really feel like we should use Orbinaut as well in some way, while still splitting them into two enemy pages. Personally, I think I would favour a more consistent/accurate title, even if it's slightly clunkier. Whatever the final call is, it can still be explained in the article I suppose.
 +
:::::::::::Orbinaut is the most inconsistently named enemy in the series, but I have a good idea of how I want to present that information on its "hub" page, when I get around to it. --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 14:39, 30 April 2020 (EDT)

== Sonic 4 enemies ==
 +
 +
I'm getting back to creating individual wiki pages for enemies that appear in multiple games. For Sonic 4's enemies, would we want [[Moto Bug (Sonic the Hedgehog 4)]] or the lengthier but more accurate [[Moto Bug (Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I)]]? [[Bubbles]] appears in both Episode I and Episode II, therefore would need both [[Bubbles (Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I)]] and [[Bubbles (Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II)]] - so would we want to be consistent with that?
 +
 +
All the Episode I enemies also appear in Episode Metal, but I think the Episode I enemy pages will suffice...
 +
 +
Similarly, how would we want to distinguish the enemies in the Wii/DS versions of Sonic Colours and the HD/3DS versions of Sonic Generations? [[Buzzer (Sonic Colours Wii)]] and [[Buzzer (Sonic Colours DS)]]? [[Crabmeat (Sonic Generations)]] and [[Crabmeat (Sonic Generations 3DS)]]? --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 21:27, 15 November 2020 (EST)
 +
:Depends how much you want to write ;)
 +
:I would be tempted to leave it just as "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" because of the Episode Metal situation (and Bubbles aside, there's no overlap). Bubbles is pretty much the same across all the episodes so I'd personally probably only make one page, but it's up to you.
 +
:The Sonic Colours/Generations thing - we probably do want separate pages, for the same reason that we're splitting the 8-bit and 16-bit versions of Sonic 1. There might not be much to say yet though -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 03:14, 16 November 2020 (EST)
 +
 +
::For enemies like [[Beeton (Sonic Chaos)]] in Sonic Chaos and [[Stinger]] in Sonic Advance 1/2/3, would we want to stick to the Japanese names? In other games Beeton's name was localised as Buzz Bomber and Stinger's was localised as Buzzer, but they went unnamed in the English Sonic Chaos/Sonic Advance manuals and guide books. So for those specific games they only have Japanese names. I'm inclined to say we should use the Japanese names in these situations, since the Buzz Bomber "hub" page would have a link to every appearance anyway (like the new [[Moto Bug]] page), including Sonic Chaos' Beeton, so it would be clear that they're the same enemy.
 +
 +
::For games like Sonic Pocket Adventure and Sonic Lost World, the enemies largely go unnamed in every region. In those cases, I assume we'd default to the English names for returning enemies? (Coconuts, Slicer, etc.)
 +
 +
::The Sonic Lost World version of Unidus presents a small problem, since it's historically had four names in English releases: Orbinaut (Sonic 1), Spiky Spinner (SA1), Spike Spinner (Sonic 4) and Unidus (SA2). In this case I think it would be best to stick with Unidus. (Uni Uni also appears in the game, but that one has consistently been called Orbinaut.)
 +
 +
::Also, I presume we'll want to eventually split [[Sonic Lost World]] up so the 3DS version has its own page? --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 17:50, 12 March 2021 (EST)
 +
:::Yes if the names weren't localised, go with the Japanese versions. If the enemies weren't named at all, default to the English names in other games (though point out that it wasn't named).
 +
:::And yes for splitting Sonic Lost World if it needs doing - I'm not overly familiar with the later Sonic games so this might be worth doing for other ones too -[[User:Black Squirrel|Black Squirrel]] ([[User talk:Black Squirrel|talk]]) 06:33, 13 March 2021 (EST)
 +
 +
::::Thanks! I've made a start on giving [[Sonic Lost World (Nintendo 3DS)]] its own articles. Once that's done I'll remove the 3DS info from the Wii U/PC Sonic Lost World pages.
 +
::::[[Mecha Hiyoko]] is a unique case when it comes to enemy names. It wasn't named in its first two appearances (Sonic 2 8-bit and Sonic Chaos) but it was named in its third and final appearance (Sonic Triple Trouble). So for this enemy's Sonic 2 and Sonic Chaos pages, would we want to use a name that may not have even existed in 1992 or 1993? Or should we use the Mecha Hiyoko name for all three games and add a note explaining the situation? --[[User:Pecky|Pecky]] ([[User talk:Pecky|talk]]) 10:41, 14 March 2021 (EDT)
 +
:::::I want to make a comment regarding this decision, as I am getting complaints from users in the Discord server about the idea of splitting enemy pages on a per-game basis. Primarily, their case is that doing so clutters the end-user experience and makes those pages inconsistent with the rest of the wiki. --[[User:BSonirachi|BSonirachi]] ([[User talk:BSonirachi|talk]]) 17:16, 22 April 2023 (EDT)

Template:ChaotixEnemies - Seeing as you made the page and presumably know which badniks are actually IN Chaotix from a list or something, can you image in the relevant ones from Template:SCDEnemies? Thanks Overlord 14:35, 21 June 2009 (CDT)

Thank you! Overlord 15:58, 21 June 2009 (CDT)

Apparently asking pretty much the same as Overlord; I've imaged all the Sonic Triple Trouble badniks (Category:Sonic Triple Trouble Screenshots), but aside from the obvious ones I don't know which weird Japanese names refer to which robots. Any chance you could match the names to the faces on Template:SonTripleTroubleEnemies? Frozen Nitrogen 19:16, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Done... sort-of. I don't really have the time to rip the individual sprites at the moment but I made a few placeholder pages for you -Black Squirrel 17:29, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Gold Cartridge?

I have recently noticed that Sega used Gold Cartridges for the SMS games. So did Samsung sometime later on. Are they just plainly suppose to be limited editions or do they have any purpose? (Already asked Mathuser :V)(http://cfile1.uf.tistory.com/image/156295474D1A1F7A04A6EE) -Slimer --아힝흥행 00:38, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm under the impression that Sega called all the SMS cartridges they published "Gold Cartridges" (at least, in Japan).
It's a fairly meaningless title, probably used to differentiate Master System games from SG-1000 ones, but every Japanese SMS game was published by Sega so there's quite a lot of "Gold Cartridges". Interestingly there are two exceptions - Argos no Juujiken and Solomon no Kagi: Oujo Rihita no Namida, both published by Salio and given the title of "Silver Cartridge". Bizarrely limited editions such as Great Ice Hockey opt for the western packaging.
I've no idea what the situation was in South Korea - I imagine they just copied the Japanese naming scheme for a bit before switching to something more unique. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the unlicensed variants copied the Japanese design for "authenticity" -Black Squirrel 16:02, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I see, thanks. Samsung did do Gold Cartridge back than. They still did it for Mega Drive Games too surprisingly. (Micheal Jackson's moon walker Gold Carts and other stuff.) Question about references

Say, is there any point to adding a References section to pages that don't have any reference links in them? --BSonirachi (talk) 14:40, 29 March 2018 (CDT)

Absolutely - it means nobody has to write these sections later, and (hopefully) encourages people to add references.
The time might also come where I replace all of these sections en masse with a lovely template that points out which pages don't have any references. Right now that's most of them though. -Black Squirrel (talk) 14:44, 29 March 2018 (CDT)
But won't there be pages where finding and adding references to them just won't be possible at all given the content these pages would have? --BSonirachi (talk) 14:46, 18 April 2018 (CDT)
Maybe, but we're prepared for whenever the day arises. I think it's a good habit to get into, even if these sections remain blank (perhaps one day we'll figure out a system of hiding the blank ones) -Black Squirrel (talk) 14:51, 18 April 2018 (CDT)

Comic pages and pending move requests

It's exhausting work, but so far I have written up the entirety of Sonic the Comics adaptation of Sonic Adventure and nailed down all of the reprint-only issues that followed it. It would also be a good idea that you check the covers you upload for details such as release dates, prices, credits and any free gifts that came with the issues, and links to previous and next issues.

Also, the IDW comics need to be added to the Printed Media tab on the wiki's header so they're easier for visitors to access. Dunno why it was never done in the first place when the comics came out.

And one last thing, several pages have pending move requests, some which have been pending for a while:

--BSonirachi (talk) 18:14, 19 March 2019 (EDT)

Dooone
All the release details for STC already exist at sega:Template:IssueNameStore/UK (N-Z) - I'd think we'd rather make that table cross-wiki than write it all out again. Progress on that sort of thing is slow and out of my control. -Black Squirrel (talk) 13:45, 20 March 2019 (EDT)

Text replacement assistance needed

So I have decided to give the affiliation field for Template:EnemyBob the same kind of automation treatment that the games field has, but I do have one problem on my hand: I have to edit a LOT of pages I already assigned affiliations to in order to accommodate for the changes, which is going to be very tedious to do manually. Since you have that text replacement tool handy, could you use that to change everything for me please?

I also added {{{affiliation2}}} for the case of enemies with more than one affiliation (such as Badniks that fell under the Deadly Six's control in Sonic Lost World), so you'll probably need to accommodate for those as well. --BSonirachi (talk) 12:54, 25 July 2019 (EDT)

If the English names are supposed to take priority over Japanese names, then why have the remaining English names been moved to the Japanese ones? Shouldn't it be the other way round, especially considering the US manual names all of them? --BSonirachi (talk) 14:32, 4 November 2019 (EST)

Old file deletion

AniGIFs are bulky, so I'll need to have the older versions of these two files deleted:

--BSonirachi (talk) 16:52, 24 November 2019 (EST)

I've thought about doing animated GIFs myself, but I can't get good frame rates on this machine. As long as the results look alright (which these do) I've got no issues -Black Squirrel (talk) 17:25, 24 November 2019 (EST)
What I used to make those GIFs was BizHawk's ability to record AVI/WAVs, which can be configured to output recordings as GIFs. Combined with things like advancing frame by frame by pressing a key, I can make good aniGIFs. Give it a try sometime. --BSonirachi (talk) 17:46, 24 November 2019 (EST)

"In other media" - common enemies, Zones

In the past we'd talked about giving recurring enemies (Buzz Bomber, Moto Bug etc.) a page per game, much like we have for Metal Sonic boss fights and the multiple Green Hill Zones. How should "in other media" sections be handled for Green Hill Zone and, in future, enemies?

Might it be worthwhile to rename and reformat the Green Hill Zone disambiguation page into something of a "hub"? I'm thinking along the lines of:

1. A one/two sentence blurb/overview
2. The current "Levels" section (rename to "Game appearances" for consistency?) linking to each individual page
2b. Similar/Related Levels? (Emerald Hill Zone, etc.)
3. In other media

Also, in terms of each enemy having its own page per game, I'm guessing this would also apply to the 16-bit and 8-bit versions of Sonic Spinball? --Pecky (talk) 11:57, 7 March 2020 (EST)

Sounds like a good plan - I would probably turn the current Green Hill Zone disambiguation page into this "hub" and stick it in Category:Locations
The Spinball enemies would be split up, yes. I would hope that one day there'll be a meaty "Technical information" section for each which should be quite different for each game -Black Squirrel (talk) 15:04, 7 March 2020 (EST)
Great! --Pecky (talk) 16:46, 7 March 2020 (EST)
Yes that would be the plan - Green Hill Zone, Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)), Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)) etc. -Black Squirrel (talk) 07:50, 8 March 2020 (EDT)
That does bring a question to mind when it comes to titles with brackets. --BSonirachi (talk) 10:46, 8 March 2020 (EDT)
I'm easy either way, although there's also the question of Sega Retro's page, sega:Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive), which might be preferable to "16-bit" -Black Squirrel (talk) 13:47, 8 March 2020 (EDT)
I've updated Green Hill Zone (disambiguation). It'd probably look tidier if the level list was a table, so I'll try to get around to that at some point. Should it be renamed to Green Hill Zone now? Sonic Forces is something of an issue with its stage naming convention. For example, the first level is called:
Stage 1
Green Hill
Lost Valley
Essentially, each stage is given a stage number, an area and a level name. Sometimes the latter two are the same (Stage 10, Green Hill, Green Hill). Currently the wiki isn't fully set up to accommodate this. Ghost Town has City in its location field, but I don't think the other locations have pages yet. A lot of these areas have familiar names - Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Metropolis, Death Egg. Perhaps Green Hill (Sonic Forces area), Metropolis (Sonic Forces area) and so on would be good equivalents for the City page? I'd have to look into whether Sonic Forces has an official terminology for these areas/regions/locations though.
Speaking of Death Egg, I think that should probably get the same treatment as Green Hill. Currently we have pages for Death Egg and Death Egg (disambiguation). I don't think there's a need for both, and will incorporate the latter into the former, if that's okay? Chemical Plant, Seaside Hill, Rooftop Run and other frequently recurring stages would probably benefit from similar treatment.
I'm keen to get started on the enemy pages, but I'm a little hesitant until we're all on the same page regarding brackets and 16-bit vs Mega Drive, 8-bit vs Game Gear/Master System, etc. I don't want to end up creating more work for anyone else later. --Pecky (talk) 10:28, 15 March 2020 (EDT)
I've avoided Sonic Forces so don't know much about that game - do whatever you think is best.
And yes something similar should probably be done about Death Egg. There could be a few of these - Casino Night looks like another, Chemical Plant as well. -Black Squirrel (talk) 12:42, 15 March 2020 (EDT)
I've updated the Death Egg page. This one was a little different, because it's both a level and an object that appears in other levels. The Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone page needs renaming to be game-specific, and the Green Hill Zone (disambiguation) page needs to become Green Hill Zone or Green Hill. Giant Mech also needs to be renamed, since its official name circa 1992 is "Death Egg". --Pecky (talk) 11:33, 23 March 2020 (EDT)
I made a page for Buzz Bomber (Sonic the Hedgehog 16-bit), as an example of how these game specific enemy pages could look going forward. Would we still want "affiliation" on these ("Eggman Empire" wasn't a thing in Sonic 1, but "Dr. Eggman" might suffice)? I couldn't figure out how to properly align the text to the images in the gallery. Anything else that should be changed? --Pecky (talk) 12:34, 29 March 2020 (EDT)
Since the two types of Orbinaut in Sonic 1 are classified as different enemies in Japan (Uni Uni and UnidasuMedia:CE_S1_07.png[1]) I'd like to give each of them their own page, but I'm unsure how to title them. Would Orbinaut (Uni Uni) (Sonic the Hedgeog 16-bit) be too wordy? Additionally, ウニダス is officially Romanised as Unidasu in Sonic Jam and Unidus in Sonic Adventure (JP manuals/guides) and Sonic Adventure 2 (JP/ENG guides). Would we favour the Unidus spelling for consistency with other games, or the Unidasu spelling since the Sonic Jam gallery directly relates to Sonic 1? --Pecky (talk) 09:32, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
I'm no expert in Japanese, but I suspect it's meant to be "Unidus" everywhere.
On NEC Retro we've got a game called "Fan Fun", which in katakana is "ファンファン". Technically "Fan Fan", "Fan Fun", "Fun Fun" and "Fun Fan" are all valid translations - I suspect it's a similar issue with Unidus (Unidas).
I'd be tempted to go Unidus (Sonic the Hedgeog 16-bit) and Uni Uni (Sonic the Hedgeog 16-bit), but I admit that's inconsistent. Though IIRC we do have other games where some enemies were named in the Japanese verison but not in the English translations -Black Squirrel (talk) 10:34, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
Sonic 1 is an odd duck, since some enemies are missing from the western manuals, but were officially named in merchandise etc, which persists to this day.
Orbinaut is the most inconsistently named enemy in the series, but I have a good idea of how I want to present that information on its "hub" page, when I get around to it. --Pecky (talk) 14:39, 30 April 2020 (EDT)

Sonic 4 enemies

I'm getting back to creating individual wiki pages for enemies that appear in multiple games. For Sonic 4's enemies, would we want Moto Bug (Sonic the Hedgehog 4) or the lengthier but more accurate Moto Bug (Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I)? Bubbles appears in both Episode I and Episode II, therefore would need both Bubbles (Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I) and Bubbles (Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II) - so would we want to be consistent with that?

All the Episode I enemies also appear in Episode Metal, but I think the Episode I enemy pages will suffice...

Similarly, how would we want to distinguish the enemies in the Wii/DS versions of Sonic Colours and the HD/3DS versions of Sonic Generations? Buzzer (Sonic Colours Wii) and Buzzer (Sonic Colours DS)? Crabmeat (Sonic Generations) and Crabmeat (Sonic Generations 3DS)? --Pecky (talk) 21:27, 15 November 2020 (EST)

Depends how much you want to write ;)
I would be tempted to leave it just as "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" because of the Episode Metal situation (and Bubbles aside, there's no overlap). Bubbles is pretty much the same across all the episodes so I'd personally probably only make one page, but it's up to you.
The Sonic Colours/Generations thing - we probably do want separate pages, for the same reason that we're splitting the 8-bit and 16-bit versions of Sonic 1. There might not be much to say yet though -Black Squirrel (talk) 03:14, 16 November 2020 (EST)
For enemies like Beeton (Sonic Chaos) in Sonic Chaos and Stinger in Sonic Advance 1/2/3, would we want to stick to the Japanese names? In other games Beeton's name was localised as Buzz Bomber and Stinger's was localised as Buzzer, but they went unnamed in the English Sonic Chaos/Sonic Advance manuals and guide books. So for those specific games they only have Japanese names. I'm inclined to say we should use the Japanese names in these situations, since the Buzz Bomber "hub" page would have a link to every appearance anyway (like the new Moto Bug page), including Sonic Chaos' Beeton, so it would be clear that they're the same enemy.
For games like Sonic Pocket Adventure and Sonic Lost World, the enemies largely go unnamed in every region. In those cases, I assume we'd default to the English names for returning enemies? (Coconuts, Slicer, etc.)
The Sonic Lost World version of Unidus presents a small problem, since it's historically had four names in English releases: Orbinaut (Sonic 1), Spiky Spinner (SA1), Spike Spinner (Sonic 4) and Unidus (SA2). In this case I think it would be best to stick with Unidus. (Uni Uni also appears in the game, but that one has consistently been called Orbinaut.)
Also, I presume we'll want to eventually split Sonic Lost World up so the 3DS version has its own page? --Pecky (talk) 17:50, 12 March 2021 (EST)
Yes if the names weren't localised, go with the Japanese versions. If the enemies weren't named at all, default to the English names in other games (though point out that it wasn't named).
And yes for splitting Sonic Lost World if it needs doing - I'm not overly familiar with the later Sonic games so this might be worth doing for other ones too -Black Squirrel (talk) 06:33, 13 March 2021 (EST)
Thanks! I've made a start on giving Sonic Lost World (Nintendo 3DS) its own articles. Once that's done I'll remove the 3DS info from the Wii U/PC Sonic Lost World pages.
Mecha Hiyoko is a unique case when it comes to enemy names. --Pecky (talk) 10:41, 14 March 2021 (EDT)
I want to make a comment regarding this decision, as I am getting complaints from users in the Discord server about the idea of splitting enemy pages on a per-game basis. Primarily, their case is that doing so clutters the end-user experience and makes those pages inconsistent with the rest of the wiki. --BSonirachi (talk) 17:16, 22 April 2023 (EDT)

You're pointing to images that don't exist - did you forget to upload something? -Black Squirrel (talk) 06:48, 10 September 2022 (EDT)
It gets worst the more I edit it, can you just delete my edits? Thanks.--MathUser2929 (talk) 09:57, 10 September 2022 (EDT)
I reverted it, if I try again I'll probably do it a pic at a time.--MathUser2929 (talk) 10:36, 10 September 2022 (EDT)
How about making that text field in the article smaller. I saw that NBA Jam Tournament Edition looks way different on Sega Retro.--MathUser2929 (talk) 17:14, 10 September 2022 (EDT)

\\lcd for sonic fix== I just uploaded a page for a discount on 2 videos and I was wondering if you can fix the links, I am really out of practice.--MathUser2929 (talk) 21:47, 13 September 2022 (EDT)

aosth episode from wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventures_of_Sonic_the_Hedgehog

Think it would be ok to use wikipedias episode list for the synopsis in each of the episode summeries here? Wikipedia is pretty open about those things I think.--MathUser2929 (talk) 13:55, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

It's fine as a starting point... if they're correct. You might want to check if they're correct -Black Squirrel (talk) 14:05, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

Adding sprite files to gallery

"You may be better asking Black Squirrel about this", so here I am.
Requesting some help with this { User_talk:BSonirachi#Add_sprite_files_to_gallery }.

Briefing:
can't currently use the files intended to be used as sprites, because this

<gallery>File:SonicR PC Sprite Items.png|crop_width=64|crop_x=64|5 Rings [[Item Panel]] from ''[[Sonic R]]''</gallery>

makes this

and there seems to exist no other way of adding sprites to a gallery. --SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 22:01, 23 March 2024 (EDT)

Ah yes.. .they're not really designed to work like that
The crop_width and crop_x arguments are for Template:SpriteImage. This makes it so that only a portion of the sprite sheet is seen on-screen. Mediawiki's <gallery> tags will always show the full image.
The solution as said would be to make a special gallery-esque template, however this might not work too well - when you start resizing images, the "crop_x=64" stops being the 64th pixel and then things can get messy with rounding. You might need a different solution -Black Squirrel (talk) 07:00, 24 March 2024 (EDT)

If you have a better idea for a solution than this, please tell--SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 21:42, 24 March 2024 (EDT)
Well, I already opted for a different implementation of this, so there is no more trouble surrounding this business. --SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 14:56, 31 March 2024 (EDT)

Image sizes in Template:EnemyBob

How do I make the images resise to a wanted size, to avoid this: {{EnemyBob | image=Dark_Fright_SU.png | image2=DarkFrightPS2Wii.png | imagetitle1=X-Box/PS3 | imagetitle2=PS2/Wii | imagewidth=1000px | game=Sonic Unleashed | affiliation=Dark Gaia | points= 20 [[Dark Gaia Force]] (PS2/Wii version) }} (nowiki tags necessary to prevent you from being considered a Dark Gaia minion or a Sonic Unleashed enemy)

| imagewidth= is there but does nothing currently, as you can confirm. --SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 14:56, 31 March 2024 (EDT)

imagewidth is an old template field that as you say, doesn't do anything anymore
You're right that it looks a little clunky with all that extra space, but I wouldn't worry too much. File:DarkFrightPS2Wii.png is a small image - when a bigger variant is found, that space will be filled. Otherwise you'll have to change the template to get it to automatically resize, which might have knock-on effects for other parts of the wiki. -Black Squirrel (talk) 15:08, 31 March 2024 (EDT)
The thing is that you don't have to worry about that, because the multi-image Enemy Bob is a brand new feature needing this improvement, so only new pages or revised pages will have the second image. The second image can, instead of my original idea, just be made to resise to fit in the same space as the first, and then it's just straight forward implemention and won't impact in any ways pages that only have one image (which currently are all). I just need you to help implementating this because I don't know how to do it myself. --SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 21:04, 31 March 2024 (EDT)

So? --SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 12:55, 5 April 2024 (EDT)

You have two options:
a) don't worry about it because I think it looks fine, and a bigger image will solve the problem
b) learn how to edit templates. It's exactly the same process as editing a page, and if you don't think it'll affect anything you should be able to experiment
if I do everything, nobody learns :) -Black Squirrel (talk) 07:17, 6 April 2024 (EDT)
Can you suggest me good sources (pages) to learn how to do sonic retro templates then pls? (I wasn't able to find any, all I did until now came from copy-paste of other existing templates) --SonicUnleashedPS2 (talk) 22:15, 6 April 2024 (EDT)
The best source is to either work out what our templates are doing or consult Mediawiki -Black Squirrel (talk) 07:03, 7 April 2024 (EDT)
