The Tiny Chao Garden is a mini game available in Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Pinball Party, and downloadable to a Game Boy Advance via Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Adventure DX, and Phantasy Star Online.

Like the Chao Adventure minigame on consoles, Tiny Chao Garden allows you to take your Chao with you and raise it on your Gameboy. Your Chao does not age like it does in Sonic Adventure, so you have plenty of time to raise all of its stats to level 99. You must pause the game and select Save & Exit for progress in the Tiny Chao Garden to be recorded. Simply turning the system off will not save your progress.

It should be noted that in Sonic Advance, deleting the main game's save file does not delete the Tiny Chao Garden, but once you do so, rings earned in the new game will not be transferred to the Tiny Chao Garden due to a glitch. Since this is the primary and easiest source of rings for the Tiny Chao Garden, it is highly recommended that you do NOT delete your save data in Sonic Advance.

General Features

You begin the game with a free normal Chao egg. To hatch it, simply leave it alone, or pet it by pressing the A button while the cursor is over it to speed up the process. Neither method affects the Chao after it hatches. The hatched Chao comes with a default name; its name can be changed at any time without consequence.

Occasionally, weeds grow in the garden. They affect your Chao's mood, so it's best to pluck them by putting the cursor over them and pressing A.

  • Hatching - If you don't have access to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, you can still buy a Normal Chao Egg and raise it from birth.
  • Store - See the Store section below.
  • Minigames - The two Game Boy Advances at the top right of the screen start minigames, which will earn you more rings to spend on your chao. The first (white GBA) minigame varies between games, but the second (purple GBA) minigame is always a memory match mini game. Earning rings through the minigames is innefficient compared to earning them playing Sonic Advance 1/2's main game.
  • Stats - Down the right side of the screen, the statistics of your Chao are displayed. These stats include:
    • Name - You can change it by clicking here.
    • Age - This space will either say CHILD, NORMAL, SWIM, FLY, RUN,POWER or CHAOS. Chao do not age in the Tiny Chao Garden, so this will not change unless they are uploaded to Sonic Adventure to age there.
    • Mood - How happy your Chao is, If mood and belly are kept empty for a long time, your Chao may run away. The mood decreases over time, and can be raised by petting the Chao, or by feeding it certain fruits. Mood decreases quicker if you let the garden fill up with weeds.
    • Belly - How full your Chao is. Most fruit will raise either 1 or 2 belly units. If its belly is full, your Chao will not eat fruit. It decreases over time.
    • Swim, Fly, Run, Power, Stamina - These are your Chao's ability stats. Although you cannot see the exact points per stat like in Sonic Adventure, You can see the level of each stat.
    • Rings - How many rings you have. Spend them in the store.
  • Dialogue - Occasionally, your Chao will speak to you. Its dialogue is random, but is usually influenced by its mood.

Store

By pressing the L button, the store menu panel appears on the left of the screen where you can buy fruit, Chao eggs and toys using rings earned either in the main game, or in the various minigames. The fruit and eggs can be uploaded to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Sonic Adventure DX. The Tiny Chao Garden has special colored eggs, and is the only place to buy Normal Chao eggs, which are free. Press the L button again to close the panel.

Note that while you're allowed to transfer rings from the Tiny Chao Garden to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Sonic Adventure DX, you cannot transfer rings to the Tiny Chao Garden, so doing so is not recommended.

Fruit

The different fruits one can buy at the store all have different effects on the Chao. They are summarized as follows:

Fruit Appearance Cost Mood Belly Swim Fly Run Power Stamina
1st Orange 30 +1 +2 +3 -2 -2 +3 +1
2nd Blue Squash 60 ±0 +1 +2 +5 -1 -1 +3
3rd Heart-Strawberry 55 +2 +2 +4 -3 +4 -3 +2
4th Green Apple 50 -1 +1 ±0 -1 +3 +4 +2
5th Triangular Grape 30 +1 +2 -2 +3 +3 -2 +1
6th Pear / Mango 55 +2 +2 -2 +4 -2 +4 +2
7th Square Red Apple 70 -3 ±0 +3 +1 +3 +2 -5

Eggs

You are allowed to raise only one Chao at a time, however you can purchase a single Chao egg to keep in the garden to transfer to another game later. Between the last fruit and the toy slot in the store, a random egg is shown for sale whenever you boot up the game. The more expensive the egg, the rarer it is to appear in the store for purchase.

Egg Cost
Normal Free
Silver 500
Gold 1000
Ruby / Pink 5000
Sapphire / Blue 7000
Amethyst / Purple 8000
Emerald / Teal 10000
Garnet / Red 12000
Aquamarine / Cyan 14000
Peridot / Lime 16000
Topaz / Orange 18000
Onyx / Black 20000

Toys

The last slot in the store is a toy you can purchase for your Chao. Only one is shown; you must purchase them in order.

  • The first toy, a bugle, costs 1000 rings. If you give this to your Chao, it'll attempt to play it, making a short tune.
  • The second toy, a duck, costs 2000 rings. You place it in the water where it floats.
  • The third toy, a TV, costs 8000 rings. This only appears about 3 hours after you purchase the duck. You place this on the ground, and on occasion the Chao will sit down and watch it. If you interrupt the Chao while watching TV, it will be angry, like if you wake it prematurely while sleeping.

Different Versions

There are many games with a Tiny Chao Garden. Most vary in some way:

Version 1

Included in Sonic Advance, and downloadable via Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Phantasy Star Online, the first version of Chao Garden includes basic Chao care. The PSO version has a title screen, much lighter backgrounds, and also comes with a Tails Chao.

Version 2

Included in Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Pinball Party and downloadable via Sonic Adventure DX, your Chao can now Swim and Fly if it has high enough stats to, and will emit Z's when sleeping. Also the Chaos are not hatched, instead they are dropped.

Minigames

The first minigame varies between games:

Janken

TCG RPScissors.png

Included with Sonic Advance, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Phantasy Star Online. Several Cards with either Rock, Paper, or Scissors hand gestures on them fly around your chao, at the bottom of the screen, are three cards, also with a Rock/Paper/Scissors hand gesture on them. You earn rings by shooting the hands at the bottom into the hands spinning around. You have a time limit, and only 5 hands.

The rules of Rock/Paper/Scissors apply:

  • If the weapon you shoot hits a weapon it can beat, the card is removed, you get 1 ring, and your weapon is restored at no charge.
  • If the weapon you shoot hits the same weapon, the card is removed, and your weapon is restored at no charge.
  • If the weapon you shoot hits a weapon that beats it, the weapon is deflected, the card remains, and your weapon is restored with one from your stock.
  • If you miss the cards, your weapon is restored with one from your stock

The weapons are randomized, so chances are good that you will have three Rocks when there are only Paper cards left on the field. As you remove cards, the remaining ones will go faster. You lose if you run out of time or cards to shoot. If you remove all the cards, more cards appear, and you are given an extra 10 seconds.

Chao Bounce

TCG CBounce.png

Included with Sonic Advance 2. Cream and Cheese the Chao team up to get rings, Cream moves a spring on wheels in order to spring Cheese up to get the rings with fly across the sky. You clear the level by getting all the rings. Later levels have more rings which are higher up and require timing to launch Cheese higher, as the spring is also on a see-saw. If Cheese hits the ground, you lose a life. You lose the game if you let Cheese fall 3 times. The game ends after you win the 3rd round. If you do win you get 113 rings.

Chao Search

TCG CSearch.png

Included with the Chao Garden program downloaded from Sonic Adventure DX. Cheese wants Sonic to help him gather his 10 Chao friends. But with only the Chao's name to go on, the task is harder than it looks. Fortunately, Tikal will aid Sonic by telling Sonic clues as to where the Chao in question is. Clues include a direction, or what the Chao is currently doing. Using deduction, you have to find the right Chao and bring it to Cheese. Each Chao will get you 10 rings. You have 2 minutes to do this, and each incorrect guess will have 30 seconds deducted from your time.

Chao Ball

TCG CBall.png

Included with Sonic Pinball Party. Several red and green balls descend lower, your Chao is at the bottom. By pressing A or B, you can throw more red and green balls upward. When 10 balls of the same color are touching, all the balls disappear, which will release any rings trapped inside. You lose if you let the balls lower into your Chao's area.

Chao Memory

TCG Game2.png

The second minigame in all versions of the Chao Garden. 14 cards with 7 different foods on them are set up on a 6 by 5 grid. After being flipped over, your chao will walk around and shuffle the cards around. You can press A while your Chao is pushing a card to trip your Chao, briefly revealing the card he is pushing. If you guess two matching items, you will get rings for each card depending on where on the grid the two cards are located. Cards on the outer layer will earn you 1 ring each, cards on the middle layer will earn you 3 rings, cards on the inner layer will earn you 5 rings. You can only make three mistakes, and if you flip all the cards, you will get a bonus based on how many mistakes you have remaining:

  • 1 mistake left: 10 rings
  • 2 mistakes left: 30 rings
  • 3 mistakes left: 60 rings
