Spinies move back and forth slowly on the floor or walls, but can suddenly shoot a projectile out of their upper spikes, so the player must still be aware when they approach one.

Spiny has made a number of reappearances in later games, starting with Sonic Pocket Adventure's Secret Plant Zone, and later in Sonic Colours' Starlight Carnival and Asteroid Coaster, however in this game they cannot be destroyed with a Homing Attack, but can still be jumped on. They reappear in Sonic Generations' Chemical Plant visually similar to Sonic Colours, and once more in Sonic Mania's Chemical Plant Zone.
