Knuckles' special stage

The Special Stage in Sonic 3D Blast for the Genesis takes place in a pseudo-3D environment and is based on the same concept used in Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Special Stages: the player has to run on a path, collecting rings and avoiding bombs. The stages do not take place in a half-pipe, however. Each stage is divided into three parts. In each part, the player is required to collect an increasing minimum number of rings to proceed to the next part and to collect the chaos emerald. However, these thresholds are very low (50, 100, and 150 rings). These special stages are widely considered to be the easiest ones in the Sonic series.

To access those special stages the player has to find either Tails or Knuckles in the regular levels, and touch the characters while carrying at least 50 rings. Note that the ring count is set back to zero when entering a special stage. A ring bonus is awarded for those rings at the end of the act. Tails' and Knuckles' special stages only differ in their appearance. Between the two special stage settings, there are fourteen special stages, but only seven emeralds to collect: the player is given the choice to collect each emerald in the kind of stage they prefer, by this order: orange, green, red, blue, purple, grey and blue-green. Collecting all seven emeralds will not unlock Super Sonic, and is not required to complete the game. It is required, however, in order to access the Final Fight and see the good ending.

Known Changes During Development

In the Cartridge prototype found by drx, the special stages have a different layout and object placement, and the ring requirements within the stage are 60, 120, and 180 rings. In some stages there is also a fault that allows the player to jump beyond the emerald at the end and cause the game to malfunction.
