The original Special Stage from Sonic the Hedgehog.
A Special Stage is a stage whose primary function is to offer the player an opportunity to earn a Chaos Emerald (or, in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a Super Emerald) and, failing that, a bonus to their score. Special stages vary between games in both type and means of access.

In the Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, the Special Zone is a kind of alternate reality where special stages take place. Some regions have strange physics compared to Mobius, while others contain fairly normal worlds. It is here that the Chaotix crew make their home, as well as Lord Sidewinder and various other villains.
