Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is a Game Boy Advance remake of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, made in celebration of the 15th anniversary of that game, as well as Sonic the Hedgehog himself.
Similar to the version on Sonic Jam, it features a save system, and includes the Spin Dash ability from later Sonic titles available in a separate "Anniversary Mode", though the option to play it without the Spin Dash remains available. In addition, the view is slightly zoomed in and adapted for the GBA's widescreen aspect ratio, and the level select and debug codes have been left out, the former due to the fact that there is already a zone select screen.
The game is criticized for its slowdown (for example, obtaining speed shoes causes the game to actually slow down, rather than speed up), poor music renditions and sound quality, unfaithfully ported movement physics, shortened and unfaithful ending sequences, and game-breaking bugs and glitches. Therefore, many people call this the worst (Sonic) game ever made.
