Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode Metal is a free DLC "lock-on" part of the episodic game Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and was released alongside Sonic 4: Episode 2. This was a free download for anyone who bought both Sonic 4: Episode 1 and Sonic 4: Episode 2 on the same console, acting very similar to the lock-on technology from Sonic and Knuckles. It explains the backstory of Metal Sonic's return for Episode 2, and also connects the events of Sonic CD to the Sonic 4 Saga.

To access this additional content, beat Sonic 4: Episode 2 and select Single Player again. After that, it can be selected from the stage select map by switching maps to the Sonic 4: Episode 1 map.

Plot

Sonic 4: Episode Metal is set after the events of Sonic 4: Episode 1 and before Sonic 4: Episode 2. Dr. Eggman sends a probe out to the fabled Little Planet to find the remains of Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway. After locating him, he shocks Metal back to life, and instructs him to return to Sonic's world which is at its closest point since Sonic CD. Metal flies to the world and begins his journey to return to full power and face Sonic once more.

Acts

The acts in this game are divided by the zones from Sonic 4: Episode 1, however these zones aren't played in the same order from the first episode. Each zone gets one act for Metal Sonic, revealing the reasons for certain locations:

Act 1 - Metal Sonic Returns (Mad Gear) This act shows that Mad Gear was built to help restore Metal to a battle-worthy state.

Act 2 - The Alter's Hidden Treasure (Lost Labyrinth) At the end of the act, Metal finds a hidden power in the labyrinth that gives him his purple charge attacks.

Act 3 - Electric Road (Casino Street)

Act 4 - In Pursuit of Sonic (Splash Hill) At the end of this Act, Metal finds the rocket Sonic used to reach the E.G.G. Station and uses it to catch up to Sonic in White Park.

Gameplay

The game implements Episode 2 physics in the Episode 1 zones. This episode also acts almost as a Sonic 4: Ep 1 hard mode, with modified acts from the first game with new routes and changes to old ones. This could be considered similar to the Knuckles routes in the Sonic 3 stages once you locked the game on to Sonic and Knuckles.
