Sonic 2 CD (alternatively named Super Sonic) is a unreleased game for the Sega CD. Originally it was planned to be released simultaneously with the Mega Drive version but instead it was cancelled all together. Unlike Sonic CD, which was a whole new game rather than a port of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, this game was to be an enhanced port of the genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game was to have CD quality music and additional levels that the Mega Drive counterpart did not. The special stages sound similar to the Mega Drive version as it's described as being like a rollercoaster ride and takes place in a half-pipe with enemies and traps. However, it's described as having dead ends, which were not seen in the final Mega Drive version. Also shown during the E3 demonstration were cartoon like cutscenes displayed as intermissions.

There has been some discussion that Sonic 2 CD was actually Sonic CD as some people involved in Sonic 2's development that have been contacted by Sonic fans could not remember a CD port. This would mean several magazines have unknowingly printed false information or information that actually pertains to Sonic CD. This is possible (although unlikely) as this Mega Article seems to imply that at one time Sonic CD was thought to be an enhanced port of Sonic 2 until it was made clear it was a new game entirely.

Here are a few of the fantastic intermissions for the Sonic 2 CD that Sega showed at the Summer CES in Chicago. The Sega CD version is said to be almost identical to the cart, but features CD quality music tracks, sound effects, and excellent cartoon like intermissions. These screens are from a demo and may not appear in the final Sega CD version of Sonic 2.
