The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Alpha" prototype is a prototype build of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive. The EPROMs it was contained on claim it to be an "Alpha" dated August 21, 1992.

This build places itself after the Simon Wai prototype, even containing most of the leftovers such as cut Zones still being accessible. This is the first known build to feature the finalised sprites for Sonic and Tails, and the soundtrack is mostly finalised.

Attempting to play the game normally, the prototype will take the player through Emerald Hill Zone (Green Hill Zone), Chemical Plant Zone, Hill Top Zone, Mystic Cave Zone (Dust Hill Zone), Metropolis Zone and Aquatic Ruin Zone (Neo Green Hill Zone) before the game resets. Of these, Emerald Hill, Hill Top and Mystic Cave have bosses in various states of completion - other levels can only be accessed through the level select.

History

This prototype was discovered and acquired by drx of Hidden Palace in conjunction with The Cutting Room Floor, along with other prototypes of Sonic games, and dumped as part of "Sonic Month 2019" from October to November 2019[1]. This prototype was released to the public on November 10, 2019, one day after the Pre-beta prototype.
