Back to: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Simon Wai prototype)/Comparisons.

The existence of Hidden Palace Zone came to light thanks in part to the release of the Simon Wai prototype, but with the release of the Nick Arcade prototype ten years later, we can see this is the least remarkable zone in the game. This is because, for the most part, the level is identical to the Nick Arcade build, suggesting it might have already been abandoned at this point.

Hidden Palace Zone is a slightly more solid level now that some game engine issues have been addressed, but only the debug mode has any significant differences. Unlike the Nick Arcade prototype, all of the objects have the correct art, and you can no longer place unused enemies (and Buzzers).

Sonic's underwater palette has changed slightly. In the Wai prototype, it's slightly more fitting.

But while the level hasn't been added to, it hasn't been completely ignored either. Hidden Palace appears in the rolling demo, although the player chooses to avoid the Tails 1-up monitor.

With debug mode, Sonic and Tails can get a foothold on the long ramp, and freely walk up and down, although this is again due to differences in the engine rather than specific fixes for Hidden Palace.

Act 2 is a carbon copy of act 1, but without rings or objects. In the Nick Arcade prototype the second and third acts were playing by the rules of Labyrinth Zone, with leftover water height and audio trigger code still active. Here, it's all been removed, though this is likely a side effect of deleting Sonic 1 data rather than a conscious choice to fix this stage's problems.

Either way, you couldn't access this underwater section in act 2 of the Nick Arcade build, and now you can. Though there's little point in doing so.
